Rewatched 1-7 this weekend...I was a couch potato but it was rainy and pretty cold and I don’t like people...anywho...
It’s never been my favorite series but I really do love the world building and seeds they plant throughout. There is a constant stream of minor characters who become main character in later films and in references with the flashbacks that show moments we remember from new perspectives. It’s highly enjoyable noticing all the small details that they thought about as they were making them.
There’s a lot of good individual character arcs over the course of several films. Gordon, Mathews, Strahm, Hoffman...Riggs. So much to digest here.
A few moments I hate tho...the brazen bull is the biggest one. But at the same time I loved psycho killer Hoffman!

I very much like the series. I recently got the DVDs of the 8 films but I seen them all before.

There's certainly a lot to like. As you mentioned, it's interesting to watch minor characters take the lead in later movies. They're a fun watch.

Admittedly, these movies are pretty self-important and create too many twists, but I've always enjoyed this series for its ambition. It's also always fun to see what kinds of traps are in store and see if the victims will make it out or not. Still yet to see Spiral.

Personally, I think taking every bit character with speaking lines and making them a lead later did the opposite of world building. It made the world feel small. Then the excuses for it got more and more contrived. Rigg is an especially egregious example. The guy was completely inoffensive morally, and Jigsaw's justification for testing him is hilariously stupid.

Haven't seen them, don't plan to, but can't help remembering that movie I mentioned a couple weeks ago, 'Trick', from 2019. If you know the twist in 'Trick', that seems to be a similar thing with Jigsaw, Jigsaw IS dead, right? But people keep taking his place subjecting new victims to new takes on the same old bullshit.
Actually, I gotta ask, was Se7en an inspiration to this franchise? Tell me I'm not the only one seeing the similarity there.

Another one the franchise gets compared to is Cube. I don't know if they've formally cited Se7en but it'd be shocking if they didn't. Especially the new one with Chris Rock.

I agree completely, I'm not saying the Saw franchise is comparable to Kubrick or Fincher, but it's way smarter and more complex than people give it credit for, and often does leave you with moralistic questions to think and talk about. This isn't a franchise like Freddy or Jason where they could bring in a new writer/director on every movie and just fill them in on a few things that happened in previous installments, Saw only exists because its a small group of creators working on the series from start to finish, much like TV show runners. Granted I am really only speaking of Saw 1-7 because I don't think Jigsaw or Spiral are really worthy sequels. It was difficult for me when Saw ended and Paranormal Activity became the premier horror franchise because there was nothing to discuss past "that was cool how they put a camera on the oscillating fan", there was no substance, there was no speculation on where things could go, or how this relates to that etc.

Jigsaw was a very compelling, multilayered character. I think he's the best horror villain for that reason. I'm not much for torture porn, but Saw drew me in with Jigsaw's story. I absolutely adore Tobin Bell.

I can't think of a horror series that is so ready made for a binge marathon. It's fun watching the Friday the 13th series marathon style and piecing together the timeline, but still that's a franchise that's entirely contrived from film to film based on who's making it. The Saw franchise up until the two most recent ones are the brainchild of just a few filmmakers, and once they realized they had a franchise on their hands, they continuously planned each installment. It wouldn't surprise me if Darren Bousman was already writing the rough draft for the next movie while finishing the final draft of the current one.

Just got done watching the new one. It's alright but could've benefited from a longer runtime and I feel like it isn't as creative as it claimed to have been. Still, the traps are always nice and I thought Zeke was a decent character. If anyone is expecting it to be a satirical take with Rock and Jackson as the top billing cast members, they may be disappointed.

I bought the set but no one will watch it with me. I've seen them all before, some several times, but the older I get the more I enjoy watching movies with company.

I bought the dvd set also... Watched them last year. So they will be on my backburner until I get the urge to watch them again.
I'm a fan of movies with this setup... "Cube" etc. Some are better than others.

Having just binged the entire series this month, the story makes more sense watching them all together, rather than year to year. Plenty of disgustingness!
