AMMORE E MALAVITA is about a mob boss named Vincenzo Strozzalone who fakes his own death. We also follow his wife Maria, his hitmen Ciro & Rosario and his nurse Fatima... as well as his cousin Frank, who's in charge of threatening a certain someone into killing an employee that betrayed Vincenzo. And let's not forget Ciro's uncle Mimmo. Oh, and Mimmo's daughter Mariellina. All of this told through purposefully silly musical numbers. Clearly a wacky comedy, right? Well, that doesn't excuse the bad performances. None of the new songs are particularly memorable, but most of them are catchy. Why add a parody of Irene Cara's FLASHDANCE... WHAT A FEELING in a musical with an original song score? It doesn't fit. It's not even really a parody. The lyrics are different, but they're not comedic. Either way, Serena Rossi injects a lot of life into this rendition while farthing against the weak arrangements. The movie manages to be as entertaining as the 133 minute runtime can allow, but it falls apart during the last part.

Vincenzo & Maria are arrested, even though they were portrayed as the kind of criminals that the police doesn't dare to touch. Ciro & Rosario get into a fight. The former offers to help the latter stand up, as a peace offering. It takes several seconds for Ciro to realize that Rosario is trying to reach for his gun with his left hand. Didn't he wonder why Rosario had extended his right hand after Ciro had extended his left hand? Anyway, shots are fired and the cops don't even try to stop them. Ciro, Fatima and Mimmo stage Ciro's death. That's right: The twist ending is exactly the same as the premise, only with a different character. It's hard to say whether this is good or bad writing, but I'm currently leaning towards the latter. After receiving evidence that Mimmo killed Ciro, Frank wakes Mariellina up and leaves her apartment. How did she fall asleep in the first place?! Even if the criminal allowed it, wouldn't the hostage be too afraid to do so?!
