Released June 1981. My favorite movie since seeing it on a VHS rental from Blockbuster in 1997. Was able to catch it at the Drive-In last summer. The 4K release is next week and it is inevitable I will buy it (Replacing the Blu-ray set, which replaced the DVD set, which itself replaced the widescreen VHS set, which replaced the pan & scan VHS set). Few movies embody pure entertainment quite like this one, moving from one great set piece to the next week with considerable humor and style.
Probably my favorite shot in the movie -

It's the grand-daddy of the modern action movie, oft imitated but never duplicated. By today's standards the pace might seem slow, but back in 1981 it was like nothing we'd seen before; non-stop action in which each subsequent sequence seemingly topped the proceeding one. But without the engaging story, lead characters who were well-drawn characters, a nifty villain, and memorable supporting characters all the action wouldn't have mattered. That's the ingredient most of today's action blockbusters seem to forget about. This holds up 40 years later as the classic it is, and along with Reds is my Best of 1981, and in my Top 5 all-time.

Leonard Maltin Movie Guide Review:
Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981) - 4 out of 4 stars
"A roller-coaster ride of a movie, rekindling the spirit of Saturday matinee serials but outdoing them for genuine thrills and chills. Ford plays Indiana Jones, an archaeologist-adventurer who goes globe-trotting in search of a unique religious artifact and runs into bloodcurdling danger every step of the way. Perhaps a bit too much at times, but why carp? Conceived by Spielberg and George Lucas, with Philip Kaufman; scripted by Lawrence Kasdan. Visual effects, editing, sound effects editing, and art direction-set decoration all earned Oscars. Followed by three INDIANA JONES films and TV series The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles. Panavision."

I like it but I prefer Temple of Doom and Last Crusade.

My #10 all-time. Feels older, in a good way.

Everything you could ask for in an action movie: romance, comedy, horror and a star making vehicle for Harrison Ford.
40 years and just as entertaining as it was when Spielberg released it to the world (and he hasn't had to endlessly tinker with it like Lucas with Star Wars).

Surely one of the best summer blockbusters of all time.

I like it a lot. The opening sequence is perfect and Harrison Ford has never been given a more suitable role. Still think Temple of Doom has a bit more dynamism.

I haven't seen it but this sounds really fascinating. Must've been great when they undertook this project when they were kids. I love fan stories like this.

I searched for this before I made my thread. I typed "Raiders" and "40" and got literally 0 results. Shows how credible this site's search function is.

One of the best of all time. I saw it in the theater and have owned it on multiple physical media and have never grown tired of it.

I saw it over 200 times and I did get tired of it--although the Ark scene is still something. I know all the dialogue by heart probably.
The Hovitos are near. Poison still fresh. Three days. They're following us.
If they knew we were here-they would've killed us already.
This is it. This is where Forrestal cashed in.
A friend of yours?
A competitor. He was good. He was very very good.
Senor. No one has come out of there alive. Please!
(spider on shoulder)
Senor.
(spiders on Sapito's back)
Stay out of the light.
(trap sprung)
Forrestal.
We must hurry. There's nothing to fear here.
That's what scares me.
(After the statue is taken, and the whip breaks under Sapito's weight..)
Throw me the whip!
Throw me the idol! No time to argue. You throw me the idol. I throw you the whip.
(he throws the idol)
Throw me the whip!
Adios senor.
(Sapito drops the whip)
(Sapito gets in the trap).
Adios Sapito.
(after Indiana Jones is outside, Belloq appears)
Dr. Jones. Again we see there is nothing you possess which I can not take away. And you thought I had given up.
Too bad the hovitos don't know you the way I do, Belloq.
Yes too bad. You could warn them, if only you spoke hovitos.
(Belloq shows the statue and speaks gibberish. Indiana Jones runs)
Let's skip to the end:
Washington scene:
The money's fine, the situation is totally unacceptable.
I guess that just about wraps it up.
For whom? The Ark is a source of unspeakable power and it has to be researched.
And it will be I assure Dr. Marcus. Dr. Jones. We have top men working on it right now.
Who?
Top. Men.
(yeah, two janitors)
***interestingly enough--the final scene with Marion on the steps was added because they finished the film and Marcia Lucas asked-where did Marion go after the island? And they realized they needed an extra scene so they shot the steps scene. It wasn't originally there according to her.
