Not for the faint of heart, perhaps.

On April 18, 1942, a little over 4 months after Pearl Harbor, U.S. bombers attacked Tokyo. The movie of this attack was “30 Seconds Over Tokyo” (1944). This was one of my father’s favorite movies of the war (he was a veteran) and has become one of mine.

Those special effects are still amazing. Yes, surely they are. Some of it is actual combat footage of B-25s on actual bombing runs but is expertly integrated with the Hollywood filming. Often in war movies of that age, the stock footage is very obvious due to the lesser quality of the film stock and cameras but in “Thirty Seconds” you cannot tell where one or the other begins or ends. The film makers did have access to B-25s during production. Also, as the clip demonstrates, from the time the bomber crews are told to get ready and take off early because of approaching bad weather to the arrival in China, there is no musical underscore. The roaring of the plane engines serves that function and it does create tension. For the younger members of the board, that is Van Johnson in the pilot’s seat as Capt. Ted Lawson (1917-1992) whose as-told-to memoir of the same title was the film’s basis. Don DeFore is the co-pilot. The gunner in the bubble is Robert Walker, best known these days from Hitchcock’s “Strangers On A Train” (1950).

Van Johnson, Don DeFore (Ozzie and Harriet, Hazel), and Robert Walker were intended to convey wholesome Average Joes called to perform courageous deaths - and delivering.
Destination Tokyo is another "get back at Japan" film with great special effects.
