I know this has always been a controversial album for Metallica, but if you take it on its own terms (and that's they key), it's actually a pretty good album. And this is coming from someone who enjoys the first five classic Metallica albums. There are the hit singles like Until It Sleeps, Hero of the Day, Ain't My Bitch, The Outlaw Torn, and King Nothing, but I also like album tracks like 2X4, Bleeding Me, Ronnie, and Wasting My Hate. I also think songs like Cure and The House That Jack Built are underrated. Even songs that are considered weaker songs like Mama Said, The Thorn Within, and Poor Twisted Me aren't bad. Would I have wanted Metallica to keep going in the direction that this album went? No, but this period for the band still brought out some pretty good songs for what they are. So while it's not a masterpiece or even on the same level of the first five Metallica albums, I do think it's a very good album that deserves another listen with an open mind and ear.

I remember when I first heard "King Nothing" I thought it might be a good song for a new band, but it was a bad Metallica song.
Their self-titled "black album" remains to this day the last Metallica album I purchased. I don't want to be too negative, but "Load" effectively killed my interest in the band.

Imagine being Jason Newstead, taking a spot in an iconic band like Metallica only to have your only decent album not have an iota of bass on it. Instead what we are left with is garbage like Load.

Nowhere near the level of the first four albums, but truthfully I liked Load as much as the Black album.
Man, that record caused a lot of controversy when it was released. Metallica cut their hair, they're playing shorter, concise songs, Oh my God, gather the neighbors and pitchforks!!! đ
Poor guys got raked over the coals for changing their look and sound a little bit, while ACDC gets treated like royalty for playing the same song for 134 years. Ugh.

I remember how bad it was, in 1994. But in 2021 i's genius.

It was their weakest album at the time, but Until it Sleeps, King Nothing, Bleeding Me, Hero of the Day, Ain't My Bitch, and The Outlaw Torn are solid tunes.
