I remember this mainly due to seeing it at the Drive-In the same night Princess Diana died. Revisiting the movie years later, it’s an alright Die Hard clone. With Harrison Ford as the president, he’s noble to a fault; definite pure fiction. As soon as we first hear Jerry Goldsmith’s score, I’m surprised we didn’t see an eagle fly across an American flag. I think Gary Oldman commented he did this movie largely for the money. He brings the expected intensity, especially in the scene with him and Ford finally meeting. For whatever reason, I still find myself annoyed with Dean Stockwell’s performance.

I recall liking it until the bad guy harrumph cough spoiler......then then last twenty minutes or so interminably dragging like lead filled boots.

It is a fun action thriller in the vein of Die Hard. The cast and the score are what makes it work as well as it does. Gary Oldman is awesome in the movie. "You think you can lecture me on the rules of war?...DON'T!!"
7/10

It's an entertaining action film overall worth watching every few years even though you need the usual suspension of disbelief.

Leonard Maltin Movie Guide Review:
Air Force One (1997) - 3 out of 4 stars
"Supercharged thriller about brutal Kazakhstani terrorists taking over Air Force One and holding the President, his family, and his entourage hostage in midair. Intense, violent, edge-of-your-seat popcorn fodder, anchored by Ford as a two-fisted president who's not afraid to fight. Requires the usual suspension of disbelief, but pays back in spades. Thundering score by Jerry Goldsmith."

The actress who played Ford’s daughter has a net worth of $500 million. Damn. Really? Did she come from a rich family or marry into one? Or invent something?
It's a hokey film but it has a great action suspense set up --when the plane is almost stopped on the runway--and Oldman is great as the bad guy.
I like Dean Stockwell in it. He's chewing scenery but if he didnt it would be less fun in the White House. The execution scene of the deputy press secretary is suspenseful and disturbing.
Ford comes across well in the scenes where he has to go along in the underground of the plane--Peterson got some good acting out of him in those moments.

The only thing I really remember about it is that, at the time I saw it, I thought some of the special effects were surprisingly cheesy looking for such a big-budget "A" picture.

We see it every now and then, but... there is no hint of a motive for the inside traitor.
And the General: shot while being released. That's rough.

It was 1997 what were you expecting? I thought some of the FX looked cheesy -- in 1997. And what do you want Harrison to have done about that? You've obviously grown since then, didn't you think to create your own studio by now and remake Air Force One with new less cheesy tech available today?

It's an OK action flick with some less than stellar FX shots (for its time) in it... Is it a crime to hold that opinion or something?

I liked it okay. I saw it in the theater. My parents loved it though and watch it fairly often. "Get off my plane!" is one of my Mom's favorite movie quotes.
