Sadly, it will likely be shot mostly on green-screen sound stages for CGI purposes -- in contrast to the glorious original film.
Speaking of which: Weir's epic is damn near perfect. Well-made period films will NEVER seem "too old fashioned." (There's only one glaring mistake in it, really... and it happens right in the first minute. A caption reads, "1805. Napoleon is master of Europe." Nope! The Battle of Austerlitz, after which Bonaparte could make that claim, happened on December 2nd, 1805. Being on the far side of the world, as it were, there's absolutely no way Crowe and crew could have known it had even happened. The caption should have read "1806"...)

The previous version was fine as it is.

I liked the Russel Crowe version. Too bad they never made any sequels. Apparently there’s a few novels in the series.

Friend of mine loved the book series, and when he found out they were going to do a movie, he went with me to see it. First time I've ever heard him LOVE a film adaptation of any book/series he had read. I'd never read the books and I also came out of the movie absolutely loving it. Be interesting to see who they do with the prequel.
