Any fans of "The Rock" starring Sean Connery and Nicolas Cage and directed by Michael Bay? How has it held up after 25 years? For a lot of people, it's considered Michael Bay's best film although it's certainly not without flaws. I remember it having a really fancy two-disc DVD set. Now the movie has action figures for it. Leonard Maltin Movie Guide Review: The Rock (1996) - 2 out of 4 stars"Big, loud, often dumb action/suspense yarn about a disgruntled marine general who takes over Alcatraz, threatening to obliterate San Francisco with high-tech poison gas. Enter FBI biochemist Cage and long-imprisoned British agent Connery--the only man who ever escaped from The Rock--to lead a rescue team onto the island. Plenty of kinetic action and destruction, as well as contrivances and story holes. David Marshall Grant appears unbilled. Super 35."

Best Bay film. The only thing that makes me laugh is when the government guy says the microfilm has the secrets of everything--the alien crash at Roswell--he makes it sound like aliens are real-which should be a bigger deal to the other guy--what?? Aliens are real?
Action figures eh?

I still find it hard to believe that Michael Bay is apparently capable of directing a movie that good, but he is.

Awesome movie. 8/10. Makes a great Nic Cage trilogy with Con Air and Face/Off.

Bay's best movie but I think he makes decent action movies when they are R rated.
His non R-rated stuff is mostly awful.

Con Air and The Rock are both from Jerry Bruckheimer films. They almost both feel like they are from the same director.
My favorite line from the movie -- "Your best? Losers always whine about their best. Winners go home and f--- the prom queen."

The only PG-13 movie of Bay's I enjoy is "Armageddon". Each Transformers movie gets progressively worse. You know a movie is bad if Shia LaBeouf won't appear in it after three installments.

awesome movie. Credit should also be given to the villain General Hummel and Ed Harris' performance. A more complex, and sympathetic villain that you usually see in a typical action movie
fun fact the movie had uncredited script contributions from Jonathan Hensleigh (Die Hard With a Vengeance), Quentin Tarantino, and Aaron Sorkin
the shower scene is one of the most intense scenes I have ever scene with some great acting from Harris and Michael Biehn in a small role

The Rock sucks ass. The only semi-watchable Bay film is The Island and even that is at best a 6 out of 10.

I'm very much anti-Michael Bay, but The Rock is a damn fine action movie.

Fun movie. Cage and Connery are awesome together and the Hans Zimmer score is very good.

I will try to make The Rock my next Criterion Collection purchase. On Blu-ray, when the next half off sale at Barnes and Noble commences.
