What are some good summer movies?
I don't mean movies released during summer like expensive blockbusters, but films that perfectly capture the spirit of summer.

A very fitting topic, and yeah, I guess it is impossible not to bring up the camp-slasher films of the early 80s, and I am not gonna include a whole lot of those, but the one I always returns to, and which I think is the best or most memorable, also having such a great atmosphere and fun characters, is The Burning (1981). The cheesy, yet also at times creepy score by Rick Wakeman, and some of the aboslute gruesome effects and kills, surely among the very best made of the slasher era, and such a shame, you had to wait until 2007, before we got a fully uncut DVD, and in Norway, we had to wait another 10 years, before it was released once more, uncut on both DVD and Blu-ray. Continuing on, within the world of 80s horror. Some films fit very well, for when I want to relax with a more night themed summer release, and where I think Near Dark (1987) is one that is well made for enjoying, and cooling off too, with the beautiful scenery, Jenny Wright, the haunting music by Tangerine Dream, and yeah, a damn fine movie. Basket Case (1982) is also very heavy on the summer atmosphere, set into the big city and one I feel suits perfectly during late summer nights. And of course, that is also when and how I first got to see it. Could not sleep, because it was so hot outside/indoors, and just ended up watching some random late night cable, and found Basket Case, and it was love at first sight. Then you have all these animal/monster creature features, Jaws rip-offs, like Grizzly (1976), Piranha (1978), Humanoids from the Deep (1980) and sure, the Jaws sequels as well, which I really enjoy. Within action and adventures of the 70s and 80s, films like The Terminator (1984), The Warriors (1979), Cobra (1986), Road House (1989), are also what I would think of as summer-movies, or the time of year, I usually would like to see them the most, of course late at night.

I think it was actually put out, during march of 1990, but along with the sequel, I have always loved watching them during late summer nights. The city of New York just oozes of that classic late 80s and early 90s busy and chaotic summer in the city feel, and the opening shot, with April introducing us to the lesser nice things of what is going on, in the criminal underworld and the whole foot clan influence on young kids and teenagers, that is such a fine way of opening up the movie with.

Wow. I didnt think anyone else saw that film. I felt alone. Local station would broadcast it (sans nudity/language) during the '80s as part of a themed week, along with The Van, Malibu Beach, and the like.
