I have never been much of a fan of these movies, but at least the first 2 were creative to some extent and are somewhat creepy and intense.
The movie starts with an unintentionally funny demonic possession scene that hits ever single possession cliche there is and even copies the famous Father Merrin arrival scene from The Exorcist. Most modern day horror directors have no idea how to make scenes creepy. The scenes that should be scary and suspenseful just feel like the director put no thought into the cinematography or editing at all. This movie is one of the more blatant examples of lazy filmmaking. It feels like none of it was storyboarded.
Anyway, the movie starts with a possessed kid that passes the curse onto someone else and then that person kills one of his friends and is arrested for murder. This leads to the 2 paranormal detectives to find evidence that the court can use so that the one charged with murder can use "the Devil made me do it" as a defense.
Give me a fucking break. This might have been interesting had they actually had the second half of the movie be about the actual court case. The early investigation scenes feel like they are leading to something interesting, but nope, it just becomes as generic and lazy as you might expect. It just says at the end what sentence the guy got and then it ends. It makes no sense on the face of it how the paranormal detectives would have been able to help his case with what is shown in the movie.
Vera Farmiga carries this movie on her back and I wish the rest of the movie could be on par with her performance. The second best thing about the movie is the songs.
4.5/10

Also impossible not to think of The Shining when Patrick Wilson's character is going after his wife with a sledgehammer.

I'm sure it's just me, but every time I see/hear the name "The Conjuring" I think of the Megadeth song.

Has there been a decent movie that has come out since the pandemic started? Tenet, Godzilla Vs Kong, Cruella, Mortal Kombat, Fast 9 and now Conjuring all have had at the very least mixed reviews.

Also impossible not to think of The Shining when Patrick Wilson's character is going after his wife with a sledgehammer. Wasn’t that in Insidious 2?

It's definitely the weakest of the series. Some more courtroom scenes would have been nice since this movie is about that case. As it is Arne feels like a side character when he should be one of the main characters. I do like that they got away from a haunted house though and tried to do something different. I also liked the the witch and I wish she would have been more of a character and got some development.

I actually agree with most of what you say, though I am not a fan of the witch as portrayed in the movie. As you point out, she barely registers when it comes to the writing of her character. The reason she became a witch isn't very interesting, because they just sum it up in one lazy monologue. The most frustrating thing about the movie is that the core idea is interesting, but the movie does very little interesting with it. We barely know anything about Arnie and he just ends up being a very superficial plot device.

I really enjoyed the first two movies but this one seems to be very divisive. I'll wait when I can get it on DVD.
