I don't want to bag on an old lady, but really, she was smarter than that.
How could she not hand the phone over to Tom instead of Sonny?
She wasn't a dummy, she was totally aware of the whole world around her life. She should have been wise enough to tell Connie to calm down, then go find Tom and let him deal with the situation.
Instead, she hands the phone to Santino, who she KNEW had an awful temper. And then we see what happens.
Not saying she was an accomplice or anything like that, but damn.....she definitely wasn't thinking clearly.

How do you know she didn't want Sonny to go kick the guy's ass? I mean she did stay married to a violent crime boss after all. Her character was never really developed much in the movies, so we dunno for sure what kind of woman she is.

Now that I think about it, has anyone here read the novel? Was her character developed much in that?

Her character was never really developed much in the movies, so we dunno for sure what kind of woman she is. You know, right after I posted my OP, I thought about that very thing. Maybe she figured that enough was enough with Carlo and figured that Sonny would head over there and kill him. Very interesting theory, though she had to know that Sonny was a marked man, so sending him out in the public might not be such a good idea.

Now that I think about it, has anyone here read the novel? Was her character developed much in that? Her character wasn't more developed in the novel. There is a great moment in the book that was a deleted scene from the movie where Sonny goes to tell her that Vito was shot, and she immediately knows what happened as soon as she sees Sonny at that time of the night. I believe she even says "So they shot your father" before Sonny has a chance to tell her. She was definitely aware of the life going on around her, a lot more than Kay really was.
