Makeup/prosthetics have never really went away, but it feels like it was pushed aside in the last 10-20 years because of motion capture performance work for actor transformations with Lord of the Rings (Gollum), Planet of the Apes (Andy Serkis), Star Wars sequel trilogy (Snoke and Maz Kanata), The Hobbit films (Azog the Defiler, Goblin King), etc. But with the success of Charlize Theron's makeup transformation with Bombshell, and the positive reaction to Jessica Chastain's makeup transformation for The Eyes of Tammy Faye, is it possible that makeup/prosthetics is making a comeback for actors transforming for a role? As we're getting impressed again with these actor transformations with makeup/prosthetics, it actually feels like motion capture, which was once impressive, is now getting worse (Cats, The CGI dog for Call of The Wild with Harrison Ford).

CGI is a miracle tool in the advancement of film technology but it isn't appropriate for everything. We already see the jarring artificiality of early cgi that looks worse than the matt shots of Classic Hollywood.
Think how different The Elephant Man might have turned out if they had used cgi instead of prosthetics.

Creature makeup FX is different from character makeup.
CGI eliminated some creature fx makeup work.
The other kind isn't served by CGI since it would mean long CGI sequences making alterations to someone's face.

I doubt it. "The Thing" (2011) was actually supposed to have practical effects, but the movie execs snuck in CGI effects at the last moment:
