JJ Abrams blatant throwback to Spielberg and 80s kids movies. With this movie being heavily indebted to ET and The Goonies. Many have pointed out this movie was kind of like Stranger Things before Stranger Things, I'd say the kids in this movie are all great and have great chemistry together but the whole "monster" aspect is kind of weak leading to a lukewarm third act. Would have a been a good twist if the monster was evil instead of going with the whole "he's just trying to get home!" thing. I remember people thinking this was a Cloverfield sequel or prequel after the first teaser

Yeah it was really disappointing. Stranger Things is a great example of how to do this concept properly as opposed to what we got with this flick.

A great throwback to the kids movies of the 80s. A mix of Cloverfield and The Goonies, it really captures the charm of the similar movies they made in the 80s. Great atomsphere, nicely acted and directed and crisp cinematopgraphy.
It's nice to see there's some originality left in Hollywood.
It felt like a movie made in 80s but released in 2010s. Easily the best thing J.J. Abrams has done, IMO.
Also, greatest end credits of all time.

What I remember from Super 8 was a train crash and one weird looking poorly designed alien that looked shit. The gang of kids on an adventure stories have never impressed me, did it already when I was younger with my own group of friends and it better too.

As has been mentioned by others here, I too liked the throwback style of the 80's movies.
I liked the first half, then came the alien and I couldn't get a grip on what it looked like, if that was intentional or not I don't know, to sort of symbolize that neither had the villagers or smalltowners as they offcourse never could have seen anything like it before.

Rewatched it last night for the first time since it came out on video, probably. I agree that the third act makes the movie end on more of a muffled snap than a bang.
“It’s just trying to get home!” So was ET, and he didn’t kill anybody. Are we supposed to feel bad for this thing?

Are we supposed to feel bad for this thing? They explain that the alien became hostile after it was captured and the authorities did experiments on him. They turned him into a killer.
