WARNING: SPOILERS
Nicole Kidman whispering most of the movie is annoying.
We find out early in the movie Silvia Broome (Nicole Kidman) is not a hard working innocent caught up in a dragnet of international corruption and violence. She almost immediately starts lying to, and being evasive with police. But only in the movies do the police tolerate it.
Multiple police agencies (Secret Service, FBI, New York Police) eventually start watching Silvia as both a suspect and as a potential victim. But immediately Silvia continually slips in and out of surveillance making law enforcement look extremely inept. Is she a United Nations interpreter? Or is she fricking James Bond?
Silvia, foreign representatives, a criminal suspect and two undercover police all end up on a city bus. The criminal suspect gets up to leave. One undercover officer says he can't follow because he's been made. The other undercover says he will follow. They both get off the bus. The bus drives about a half a block and explodes. Then the scene switches to all the police agencies investigating the bombing of the city bus. One undercover is killed in the blast. The other is standing around with the other police trying to deal with all the death and destruction. What happened to the criminal suspect? He was supposed to follow him. He got off the bus with him. This criminal is suspected in a string of murders, the bombing of the bus and an intended assassination. Never explained.
Multiple police agencies are surveilling Silvia. They have supposedly surrounded her apartment building. Not only does she continually slip in and out of her apartment evading surveillance --- the suspected murderer, city bus bomber and international assassin gets into her building and into her apartment before even being noticed by police. We all know liberal Hollywood hates law enforcement. But come on. Is this supposed to a serious drama? Or the Keystone Cops?
The inevitable assassination attempt occurs. The Secret Service hurries the target from behind the podium of the United Nations and leaves him alone in a supposed safe room. Nicole Kidman holds him at gunpoint, threatening to kill him. Sean Penn enters the room and tells her to put her gun down. He puts his gun down. She eventually gives him her gun. She's released because he tells the court she is not a threat to society. She just threatened to assassinate the leader of a foreign country !!! Ridiculous.
Not good.
4/10
Have you seen it?
What did you think?

I saw it at the theatre and thought it was a solid thriller. But it dropped a bit after a later rewatch.
I like old-fashioned thrillers of this type and wasn't bothered by the plot holes.
6.5/10

I thought it was terrible. You seem easy to please. No need to be a smart ass just because I didn’t agree with you. I enjoy thrillers, and like theravenking said, it’s a solid one.

I'm not being a smartass. The movie was terrible. You just seemed blinded by the presence of Nicole Kidman, Sean Penn and Sydney Pollack. Just like a Jackson Pollok painting, it seems Sydney can just throw any shit against the wall, and you will be impressed by whatever sticks.

Perhaps you should visit a therapist.
I can already imagine the conversation:
- Doctor, I can't take it anymore! There's this movie I really hate, but some posters on a message board seem to like it, and I just can't do anything about it! Help me!!!
- Calm down, Sir, and tell me all about it.
- It's called The Interpreter.
-What!? That inoffensive Nicole Kidman flick?
- But it's horrible, horrible! A work of the devil!
- Okay, perhaps we should take it step by step and start with your earliest childhood memories. Did you have an evil stepmother who happened to be an interpreter?

Nope. Just expressing my opinion. Which you seem to have a problem with. Maybe you should see a therapist.

I thought it was okay at the time and enjoyed it for what it was but for the life of me I can’t remember anything about it apart from having a fictional African country somewhere in the plot.

A psychotic despot is not going to have a conscience with a gun pointed at his head.
What did she think she was going to accomplish?
Stupid movie.
Anybody who liked this movie is an idiot.
