There's been a thread on weird animation. I want to ask the opposite question. What is the most ordinary animated film that comes to mind?
From North America in the 90's I would say pretty much any film from Golden Films. They basically take prechewed subject matter and give it a bland, simplistic animation style that doesn't stick out in the slightest. For the CG era you could say Video Brinquedo or Spark Plug Entertainment like Bug Bites: An Ant's Life.
From Japan there's a host of contenders. Nippon Animation or Toei's fairy tale films from the late 70's and early 80's would be good candidates. They are, in my opinion, better in quality than much of the other contenders I'll list. There's Swan Lake, The Wild Swans, and Twelve Months among others. And more recently, since Japan hasn't switched over much to 3D you could say that any of the generic 2D slice of life films done in a tv-like style would qualify, like say, Anthem of the Heart.
I could go on for a long time. What are the most 'normal' animated films for their current time or more recently in your opinion?
