I haven’t seen the movie or read that much about it, but I want to note that Brian Tallerico disliked it, which makes me think I’ll like it. I think Tallerico is a terrible “critic” who often doesn’t know what he’s talking about. I don’t know who he is but hating a movie for too much Raiminess is like hating Christmas for having too many presents! I KNOW, RIGHT? Also—simile of the year! Anyway, Tallerico is the new editor of rogerebert.com. He used his review of the Spielberg West Side Story to analyze the show, which he’d clearly never seen, as a “Stephen Sondheim musical.” A young Sondheim was brought in late to the project and wrote most of the lyrics, though a few lyrics were written by composer Leonard Bernstein. The real auteur on that show was director-choreographer Jerome Robbins. When commenters pointed all that out, Tallerico deleted all his Sondheim “analysis” without posting an editor’s note or correction or anything. Tallerico also doesn’t seem to know much about the movies: He doesn’t write much critical commentary, he just does poorly written plot synopses followed by saying whether or not he liked the movie. Lots of “critics” do that, but if Tallerico is any kind of editor he should know better. Or at least make it look like he knows better.

I actually just read his review and you’re right- he’s not very articulate. He does seem to at least appreciate Raimi though. A lot bad reviews I’ve read are written by heretics who couldn’t handle the Raiminess. Like the one Hauntedknight87 posted above.

Yeah, I got to wait till next Friday before I can watch this. Man, I need to stay away from spoilers for a whole week... even though I already bloody looked into that spoiler thread.

What songs were played in it? If any?

Well, we're down to a 78% RT score. The last big MCU ensemble movie to get ratings like this was AoU.

What songs were played in it? If any? That would actually be perfect.

This made me even more excited to see it. Bring on the RAIMINESS! Didn't we see a similar effect in the first one when the Ancient One sent him on that little mindtrip?

80% now. Which is great but I was expecting high 80s at minimum. Settling in the 70s would be interesting though. Well that's not good. That's around the same score as Captain Marvel and Black Widow. I wonder if that means this movie will be the next divisive MCU movie. I gave it an 8 on IMDb, but I will see it again Tuesday with my sister. I didn't like where they took Wanda. The whole cliche.

This movie gets better with each viewing. It’s easily the best movie of Phase Four.

Honestly, that’s primarily because I’m a huge Raimi fan. I enjoy the visual style of this movie 100 times more than the average Marvel outing. The Gargantos fight is one of my favorite things in the MCU just because of how well it’s shot. The script is still pretty flawed though. The awkward attempt to connect Wanda’s arc to her Disney tv show is the worst part.

I hear what people are saying about the trope of being obsessed with her kids, but I also think Olsen did a really good job. By now, she's played Wanda for several years over several films and one show; she comes across to me as someone who thinks about and cares about her character, and puts a lot into where she cant take it.
It's an opportunity most actors who only ever play their characters once can only dream of, and I think she's really seizing the opportunity. That I admire, even with agreeing that it was strange to hook her arc to the show.
I mean I'm not losing sleep over it, but I did wonder for a minute if people who didn't watch the show would have any idea what's going on.

My ratings for this movie would have been a lot higher had it been a standalone movie, not connected the MCU as a whole. Because my biggest beef with this movie was its discontinuity with other MCU movies. For example, Olsen's acting as Wanda was superb, and it made her one of the best MCU villains so far. Yet her heel-turn was so ridiculously immediate and incongruous with the Wanda we've come to know that I couldn't fully enjoy it. There was also just a lot of dumb stuff in the movie, like how Wanda was chasing after Strange and Chavez when she could easily levitate and fly. Or how Mr. Fantastic told Wanda how to defeat Black Bolt. Or how Wanda could literally rewrite reality in one second then need to resort to flinging things around again in the next. In the end, it was a movie with high highs and low lows for me. It had a lot more good stuff than Shang Chi but it was also a lot more uneven, so it finishes being 3rd in my list of phase 4 after No Way Home and Shang Chi.

I actually think the movie works better if you watch it with no knowledge of the show. There’s a few really awkward throw away lines about Westview (which can be written off as unknown backstory) but her motivation is immediately very clear: she is alone and constantly dreams of her happy alt universe self and has learned of the power to get there. Very rushed and awkward, but still straight forward. Now, if you have seen the show, you wonder why the alternate universe was never mentioned there, why she happened to create kids that looked just like them, why she doesn’t just create new versions of them with magic, why she seemed to have learned her lesson only to become more evil, ect. It just doesn’t work. My “head canon” doesn’t even include the show when I rewatch the movie.
