Is it more or less equivalent to straight-to-video? Though the way the host tells it, it seems like OVAs are more expensive productions?

Unlike how direct to video has become synonymous with lousy sequels and branded products, OVAs use to have works with high animation quality and often adult themes but at some point in the 2000s they became mostly a place for TV series offshoots and are just as bad as their American counterparts. Some of the notable ones from the 80's are Robot Carnival and if you're into artier films, Angel's Egg. The longest is a series called Legend of the Galactic Heroes. The most recent notable one I know of is FLCL, pronounced Foo Lee Coo Lee. It's not the first work I'd recommend to casual animation viewers but if you're a more dedicated anime fan who likes really creative works then I'd recommend it. There may be other good recent OVAs but I don't know what they are, with Google only showing those icon lists and linking to sites that show popular titles.

I'm all for OVA's. Some of my favorite stories were OVA's.

The original El Hazard, the best part of that franchise, was an OVA so they can definitely be done quite well. But yeah, I think I agree with gw, they've mostly become a cash grab type of thing lately.
