Space Cowboys? I remember him being bitter about being sidelined for a monkey but that's about it.

Of course! He's killing Nazis! According to the following video, 89 dead Nazis in total. Clint is responsible for most, but not all of them.

Every Which Way But Loose.
Keeping the peace between Ruth Gordon and an orangutan? Now that takes a real hero.

What!? He's almost never played an "anti hero". He's played Odysseus in most of his movies, demi gods (certainly part god) in the spaghetti garbage. Josey Wales was a total spin off of Odysseus, always insisting on face to face duels due to being blessed by the gods.
"Anti hero" means not thinking one is a "god man", not having the confidence of knowing you win any fair fight. Eastwood rarely plays anything but a classical Greek hero.
Even as outlaws, he's only played classical Greek heroes. You can whine all you want with the pot heads of the seventies who wanted to redefine the term "anti hero", but you have to rewrite the entire dictionary to do it.
Joe Kidd was his biggest attempt at an "anti hero", someone who did what it took to win.
