Haven’t seen this in a while so was eager to check it out again. Its slate of characters and story is very much film noir. You got the nameless lead, the down on his luck mechanic, the vicious gangsters, the unhappy ending, etc… Director Nicolas Winding Refn certainly has style to burn and Albert Brooks is especially good. Lovely soundtrack as well.

I like it; used to love it. It tends to oscillate for me between those two distinctions.
I don’t really buy the central romance and some of the music choices are kind of lame. Other than that, it’s a really cool and stylish crime thriller.

I agree, it's definitely like film noir. More specifically, much like those neo-noirs they used to make in the 90s. It also reminds me of the Walter Hill movie The Driver.

It was alright, but , story didn't make total sense. What didn't make sense? Well because the main character knows who Nino is, through the bryan cranston character. But also his neighbor has a boyfriend, who also knows Nino in some way. It's too much of a coinsidence.

Highly stylised, (as others have pointed out) neo-noir-ish thriller with a brilliantly stoic performance from Gosling and a great pulsating, neon drenched soundtrack.
As much as I like it though, I like Refn's more opaque work (Valhalla Rising, Only God Forgives, The Neon Demon, Too Old to Die Young) even more.

Easily Refn's best work. I can't believe his self-indulgent, pretentious ass was capable was making an entertaining movie. Nicely shot.
Gosling is great as the lead and he pretty much carries the movie. Brooks was terrific as the villain. One thing I liked about the movie how unexpected the violence was. It went from zero to ten in an instant.

I remember Ryan Gosling looking bored as fuck and then deciding that wasn't enough and that he had to bore me to fuck with his performance too.

Great movie, I like Gosling's '73 Malibu. I thought this little tid bit about the car was interesting: "According to the movie’s director, Nicholas Winding Refn, he gave Gosling permission to pick his character’s car. Gosling apparently combined his personal automotive taste, with what he thought a man such as the one he was portraying would own. After several choices were weighed for pros and cons, Gosling made his final decision, and one day took his director to a local Los Angeles junkyard. There he pointed at a beat up 1973 Malibu, which was promptly purchased by the production team. But the actor’s relationship with the Malibu only began there. It was towed to a warehouse where Gosling tore the Malibu completely down to the frame and rebuilt the entire car himself, save for the transmission, which was handled by professional mechanics. Gosling felt the exercise gave him insight into the type of patience and skill his character would have to exude in the multiple scenes where he was seen working on cars, and further gave him a “personal connection” to the car."
