Bought the 4K set earlier this week. The movies look and sound really damn good (The Thuggee temple scenes in Temple of Doom really show off its deep and rich colors). Me thinks I should probably wait until the box set is released with the fifth movie but whatever. No new bonus material is included but everything is carried over from the 2012 Blu-ray set. Worked my way backwards by starting with Crystal Skull. It gets lots of shit and some of it is warranted (swinging with the monkeys is a baffling creative choice) but there is some pretty good stuff as well. Most of it is before Indy and Mutt are kidnapped by the Commies and taken into the jungle. That being said, there is something it lacks when compared to the prior movies yet I can't quite figure out what it is. Last Crusade represents what would have been a fine conclusion to the series. The chemistry between Ford and Connery is vital to its success. Always love that moment when the fedora is placed on River Phoenix and we cut to Ford years later. It's those kinda moments which endear us to the series. I've come to appreciate Temple of Doom more over the years and, in particular, Harrison Ford's performance. His character is at his most heroic and dashing here. The mine-cart chase is just wild and I love every second of it. What was the logic behind Lao-Che telling Indiana he just drank poison or even have the antidote on him? Just wait a few minutes for him to drop dead and retrieve the diamond. Onto Raiders of the Lost Ark, which is just so fucking perfect. Between the still exciting action pieces, it's the little moments which makes this my favorite movie - like Toht unveiling a "deadly weapon" that is just a coat hanger, Marion mistaking Indy's whip for a snake, or the Swastika burning off the crate.

I think Lao Che was following the famous adage of Confucius "he who plays with fire in house, should keep pail of water as guest." He was just being careful in case some inferior servant slipped him the wrong drink.
The opening scene of Last Crusade is pretty good--Phoenix did a good job imitating Ford-especially when he is saying "it's just a snake" to his scout friend.
I bet the Crystal Skull lacks intensity. Movies today seem to be cranked down in the passion qualities--the music especially.
I listened to the Crystal Skull score and it's nothing like the ones for Raiders and Temple of Doom. Crusade is a little less oomph with the music.
I was going to see Crystal Skull the reviews were so bad and the trailer uninspiring I didn't bother--the third one seemed like a decent conclusion.
I confess I made up that Confucius line.

Great thoughts, I agree about Crystal Skull. The car chase at the university and the visit to the tomb in Central America were a great start, but it started slowing down once they are all in the jungle.
My favorite is still Last Crusade, the Connery/Ford relationship is great on screen. It's just about a perfect film in my opinion. Raiders as well. I like some of Temple of Doom like the mine cart sequence and the rope bridge, but the dining sequence in particular is very unnecessary. The history of the Thugees could have been done more tastefully. We didn't need more of Willie fainting and gagging. We had enough screaming and freaking out during the ride to the palace.

Raiders - 8 Temple - 6 Crusade - 4 Skull - 3
Diminishing returns for me... which doesn't bode well for the next one, although it was fun a couple of weeks ago following Ford's adventures around my home town of Newcastle where he was staying during filming (there were a couple of days it was all everybody back home was talking about).

Yeah you just don't like any sequel that's new.

Good reviews. I have come to appreciate Crystal Skull more over the years. In a time where there are plenty of stale, uninspired remakes and sequels, Crystal Skull doesnt do too bad of a job. Indy is still the front and centre hero of the story. He wasn't sidelined, replaced or demeaned in anyway (*cough, Luke Skywalker). Yes the story was kind of tame compared to the trilogy, but there was enough classic Indy there to be appreciated. God knows what the new Indy will turn out as.
Agree with your comments on ToD too. Indy is at his most dashing and physical swashbuckling self. His high energy in that movie is exhilarating to watch.
