A rare case where I find the remake significantly better.

Good one.
1942
I even saw the remake first. Didn't think it was very funny. The original I think is quite funny and I think it is a lot more fun. Part of the problem is that I am not much of a fan of Mel Brooks as an actor and I think the story works better in black and white.

I need to see the original again as I found it underwhelming, and I typically love 40s screwball. I still voted for it here largely on the back of Sig Ruman’s hilarious performance.
I saw the remake first, sometime back in the late 80s and don’t remember a thing about it.

I’ve only seen the 1942 version. It wasn’t really my cup of tea.

I love the 1942 version, so I was reluctant to even watch the remake, and I think most remakes are pretty mediocre anyway. But I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed the 1983 version; Brooks and Bancroft made a great team, and I loved the little dog, too. One of the few times I enjoyed a remake, although the original would be my first pick.

Never saw the original, but I enjoyed 1983 a lot. Surprisingly full of heart for a Mel Brooks movie.

Tough one. I watched them years apart, a long time ago, and loved them both. I don't remember being able to make a clear determination about which one I thought was better.
