Goofus gets it wrong again--that's a detail from a painting of the execution of Brazilian patriot Joaquim José da Silva Xavier, who was known by the name Tiradentes. He was hanged, drawn, and quartered in 1792 for his role in the Inconfidência Mineira: brasilescola.uol.com.br/historiab/inconfidencia-mineira.htmTo the best of my knowledge, Jesus played no part in this event, and the bible doesn't say anything about his being drawn, quartered and/or hanged--although if Mel could have worked all that into his film to make for a gorier and more protracted torture sequence he probably would have.

Actually if Jesus was convicted of blasphemy by a Jewish court (as per the Bible) he would have stoned to death. Not hanged. Not crucified.

Apparently it's true...religion does make you lose your head. (BTW: that's another artistic depiction of the quartered remains of Tiradentes. Not sure why a 'true Christian' keeps on confusing the mortal remains of a martyred Brazilian hero with his lord and savior, but then again it's often difficult to grasp just what's going on in the heads of the faithful.)

True, that. Does he not understand the difference between a work of art and a photo? Of course, nowadays, photos can be altered. Paintings, drawings, engravings, et al are designed to tell a story. It doesn't mean the story is real and that this is exactly what it looked like. There are thousands of paintings, over the centuries, that have been depicted just one incident differently. Ah, but BELIEF is it's own proof... to some.

Ah, but BELIEF is it's own proof... to some. Well put. Actually, I think it may be the crucifix that's confusing our pal...though why he'd think that Jesus would be lying about surrounded by souvenirs of his martyrdom, immediately post-mortem I'm not sure. Maybe the spelling of the name as 'jESUS' offers a clue to all this--so if anyone has a possible answer, write it on the back of a penny postage stamp, mail it to me, and I'll select a winner next 38th of February. All entries are guaranteed to be awarded a year's supply .
