Magnavox VCRs are absolute garbage. I have the one that includes a DVD recorder. It's over 10 years old. The VHS playback is terrible. The video recording is awful even at SP mode. There is also a high screeching back ground noise when I play any VHS tape that has been recorded on another brand VCR. DVD play and recorder works fine but the VHS is not great. I got it to just transfer old VHS vids to DVD.
IMO Mitsubishi and JVC once made the best VCRs but that was 25-30 years ago.

Walmart.com has combos (all I could find, not even best buy has anything) for $200+.

I'm not sure if you can buy a "new" VCR because I'm pretty sure they stopped making them. However, it's probably possibly to buy a used one. I found this article. It's kinda old but some of the stuff like Ebay and Amazon still apply. transfervideotapes.com/can-you-still-buy-a-vcr-player/
