The very definition of a "popcorn movie" complete with all the strengths and weaknesses. It's also a movie that doesn't stand up to scrutiny. All that being said, it's an entertaining film for a movie of its kind. It also turned Will Smith into a superstar and gave Bill Pullman a famously rousing speech. I remember whenever a video store played this movie everyone stopped what they were doing and watched the still-terrific initial alien attack sequence from beginning to end on the TV monitors. The sequel Resurgence also turns five this year. Leonard Maltin Movie Guide Review: Independence Day (1996) - 2.5 out of 4 stars"Spectacular--and spectacularly stupid--sci-fi saga of alien ships hovering over the earth and apparently planning to attack. U.S. President Pullman tries to determine how to best fight, as the stakes keep changing on an hour-to-hour basis. Big, Oscar-winning special effects are impressive, but the human stories are dumb, the writing so lame, and some of the performances so broad they make some silly 50's sci-fi movies look brilliant by comparison. 15m. added for special edition. Super 35."

Independence Day - 10/10 - A very fun and entertaining film that I have seen many times.
Independence Day: Resurgence - 3/10 - Absolutely no fun, flat out dumb and unnecessary sequel.

I'll be honest. When I first encountered a newspaper article about this film back in 1996, I thought it was an actual news article and genuinely believed (albeit briefly) that aliens were invading. Good times.
Watched and re-watched it many times in the late 90s. It's the quintessential big dumb 90s blockbuster and Will Smith's best movie role to date (not seen Aladdin). Which is a shame considering his obvious talent and charisma. An old school epic that I'll always appreciate with excellent visual effects by the standards of the time, with CGI still in its infancy (most CGI from this era looks awful today) and a heavy reliance on real models.

I remember taking no.1 son to see it and being surprised I enjoyed it. It’s great fun.

Although it’s not one of my favorite 1990s blockbusters, or even my favorite Will Smith movie, it’s still really enjoyable to watch. And it remains superior to most of the disaster movies that followed in its wake.

It's very good for what it is. Quite re-watchable, & essential 90's viewing.

I disliked it when it first came out because it wasn't innovative with FX--it was using miniatures and explosions and the ships reminded me of V. Nothing too impressive.
The aliens were kind of like War of the Worlds yet not quite. And the Star Wars-like battle at the end.
I could watch it again but it is stupid movie.

Never really liked it all that much, special effects notwithstanding.

They were using miniatures also known as practical effects the Empire state building explosion was award winning what the fuck are you talking about?

I am more impressed with something that hasn't been done before like cgi dinosaurs or mechanical creatures.

Pretty enjoyable stuff. Smith is great in it and the special effects are really good especially for their time.
