1967 though the 2016 is very good and probably the best out of the Disney remakes yet.

What about the two Maugli/Mowgli films? The Soyuzmultfilm animated version and the Andy Serkis directed film?

True, they're separate adaptations of the source material. But if you're going by the remake criteria then you should include the 1994 live action Jungle Book.

I prefer to pit the 2 most popular against each other. I didn't include King Kong (1976) in my King Kong poll either.

Can I just say both and not vote lol? If it is a tie for you, you sure can. Or just add a vote to whichever is losing. That is what I would do in that case.

THE JUNGLE BOOK 1942 3/10 THE JUNGLE BOOK 1967 7/10 There are sequels that rehash the original so much that people consider them remakes in essence. I admit I don't always agree with the examples, but is there a more obvious one than THE JUNGLE BOOK PART 2? Seriously, it's the exact same movie all over again: MOWGLI doesn't want to live in the man's village; the elephants march; MOWGLI encounters BALOO, who promises him a life of nothing but fun; they find themselves in the ruins, where the apes sing and dance; KAA gets hurt when he tries to eat someone; SHERE KHAN attacks; SHERE KHAN is defeated; MOWGLI decides to live in the man's village; BALOO sings THE BARE NECESSITIES with someone else. However, it doesn't mess with the continuity or character development. You see, at the end of the 1st movie, MOWGLI went to live to the man's village because he got horny. It's not like he had learned his lesson. And while BALOO went away singing, he was trying to look at the bright side, but it doesn't mean that he was OK with the situation. Therefore, it does make sense for the former to still feel rebellious and the latter to want the former back. I'm glad that the makers found time to squeeze in some of the original's songs, because the new ones are forgettable. Smash Mouth botches I WANNA BE LIKE YOU (it's even worse than the Jonas Brothers' version). RANJAN (MOWGLI's foster brother) and LUCKY (a vulture) are meant to be annoying yet funny. Nope, they're just annoying. 3/10 THE JUNGLE BOOK 2016 fixes 2 of the flaws in THE JUNGLE BOOK 1967: 1) SHERE KHAN now has a deep reason to kill MOWGLI: Revenge (his father burned his face) instead of... What was it before? The idea that a human would taste better? Also, he tries to convince the other animals that MOWGLI could be dangerous when he grows up. That creates a smart debate. 2) MOWGLI is much more likeable. For example, this time, he chooses to leave his tribe after SHERE KHAN's threats. In the original, the wolves decided for him. Not to mention that, after leaving, he didn't seem to miss his adoptive family. The ending is also different (MOWGLI stays in the jungle), but it's neither better nor worse. It depends on each viewer's point of view of the nature vs nurture debate. I warn you not to expect another musical comedy; this is an action-adventure movie... and a touching and entertaining one. However, 2 of the classic songs are featured (3 if you count the end credits). MOWGLI & BALOO sing THE BARE NECESSITIES in... well, the same way people in real life casually sing a song. It doesn't mean the movie is in a musical universe. Therefore, when KING LOUIE sings I WANNA BE LIKE YOU as if it was dialogue, it feels awkwardly shoehorned, Not to mention that the actors sing them badly. The animated performances are good, but Neel Sethi is the one who stands out. 9/10 ------------------------------------- You can read comments of other movies in my blog.
