So if Wonder Woman and Aquaman end up hitting a home run in their movies, is it possible that they will replace Superman and Batman as the main poster boys (girl?) for DC the same way Ironman and Captain America superseded Wolverine and Spiderman? Yes, they might, but only as long as the current bubble lasts.
While the industry bombards the market with several superhero movies a year, it is only natural that superhero fatigue regarding the top dog standard-bearers such as Supes, Bats, and Spidey sets in first. Thus, people will in time get more interested in the second and third row heroes, such as WW, Aquaman (lol!), Cap America, Ironman etc, because they are fresh(er) than, say, Supes who went through countless shows, movies and GN during the last decades.
When the genre output turns to normal or deflates, the standard heroes will be paramount again.
Btw I really doubt that Ironman and Captain America superseded Wolverine and Spiderman, even currently. People just are tired to see the same formula movies they saw for the last decades, so that is replaced with other formula movies showing different characters.
Who do you think the younger generation (ages 7-13) are more familiar with: Wolverine and Spiderman or Ironman and Captain America?

well you are begging the question, but I will say that really depends on the country, milieu, preference and media they are exposed to. As for films, they might be exposed to all these characters to the same degree. If they watch shows I would believe Spidey and Wolverine, as these both have been present for so long and there is ample material (I do not even know whether there are Caps and IM shows...). Comics I don't know, I hear they (Marvel) do not really sell much anyway.
As for anectotal: I live in Europe and if you'd wear a Captain America costume here you will either be pitied or laughed at, or much worse (I am not talking about not getting laid). Imagine this applies to other parts of the world to even greater extent.
And what I see looking in the streets: School children have a lot of Spidey stuff (like bags), I sometimes see juvenilles with Bat T-Shirts and Supes caps. But never have I seen Cap or IM (not sayin it does not exist). I looked at a local comic con too: saw one IM-costume cosplay (well made, kudos), but entire gangs of Batmen and a few Spidermen & Logans (no Supes though, he seems to be not as popular with the nerds).
I believe that Spidey, Bats, Wolverine and Supes (including Joker, Luther etc) are iconic, classic characters of their own. I do not believe Cap and IM will be as relevent anymore when they are not played by the current actors, and as soon as the hype bubble bursts.

Imagine this applies to other parts of the world to even greater extent. Good point. While Captain America may have some popularity in the U.S., he's not very popular internationally. With a name like Captain America, most of the rest of the world just sees Captain America as nothing more than a propaganda tool for the U.S. And what I see looking in the streets: School children have a lot of Spidey stuff (like bags), I sometimes see juvenilles with Bat T-Shirts and Supes caps. Agreed. Characters like Superman, Batman, Spider-Man, and Wonder Woman have been so popular for so long that they've become as iconic as Mickey Mouse and will never fade while characters like Iron Man and Captain America are just temporary fads that will fade, kind of like how Disco was very popular in the 1970s and then faded and most of today's generation don't even know that Disco used to be very popular.

If Captain America isn't popular outside of the U.S., then how Civil War was the world wide highest grossing film of last year? Or how Winter Soldier made so much internationally, too?
