Superman is still the greatest superhero movie in history and simply one of the greatest, biggest and most epic masterpieces of all time.
Donner was a legend. Too bad very few people will remember him in Italy today, just because - few hours ago - there has been a huge death/loss in our country that crushed us: Raffaella Carrà, the biggest and most popular Italian TV star.

I could have done with much less Jor-El, much more of the Kents. Or at least keep it balanced. Brando is great and all but Jor-El is basically behind everything "Superman". The Kents should be more important. Their upbringing should be the reason why Clark becomes Superman. The really questionable part is Clark apparently just "training" in the Fortress of Solitude for years. But it came off as Jor-El overwriting Clark's brain. That's Brainiac tier. It's like Clark has no agency.

It's a good movie thanks to the story and Richard Donner's direction but I wouldn't go that far. There's stuff that I don't care for like Gene Hackman's Lex Luthor and the ending is kind of hokey.

It’s good, but unfortunately, it left a shadow over the Superman franchise that still exists to this day. Even the Zack Snyder movies borrowed a number of things from Richard Donner’s Superman.

...mostly due to Reeve's sincere performance and Williams' iconic score.
Otherwise, I don't really like it.
MAN OF STEEL kicks its corny butt as a science fiction/action film -- which is what I always wanted Superman to primarily be.

Dramatically-thanks to the international cast--there's no other superhero film that has a cast like that-it can't be touched on that front. Jackie Cooper was a child star in the 1920s. Trevor Howard and Terence Stamp and Susannah York--you have both a golden age UK star and a newer one.
Same with Marlon Brando and Gene Hackman and Glenn Ford and Valerie Perrine and Ned Beatty...
It lends a weight to the film that no other superhero movie has.
Or 70s blockbuster for that matter. And for the time it was made--they showed Superman doing as many super things as possible.
But as I said many times--it needed a robot to show up in Luthor's lair for Superman to fight.
