I mean obviously he's pretty big, but his most famous role was always as the Lethal Weapon sidekick, he was never much of a headliner. I actually liked Predator 2 (not as good as the first one, better than AvP though) and at the time he was arguably the biggest black action movie star in the world (who was bigger at the time?), with the right roles maybe he could have been as big as Will Smith, Samuel Jackson, or at least Wesley Snipes.

Yes.
Also I think it is unfair to call him the Lethal Weapon sidekick. He is co-equal with Mel Gibson's character in those movies imo.
He didn't get all that many good roles. Maybe 10 for his entire career.

I think they are stronger than he is in presence as a leading man. Although Jackson is mostly supporting. I think Snipes was fine in starring roles--Blade, Passenger 57. Same with Smith.
The thing with Predator 2 is he had a lot of support characters--Busey and the others.
There were a number of 70s black actors that were much stronger as leads--William Marshall, Fred Williamson, Austin Stoker, even Bernie Casey. Thalmus Rasulala played a partner for Busey in one movie--he should have had a bigger starring career. He could have been more of a leading man based on his role in Blacula.

No he was damn lucky to have starred in the Lethal Weapon movies because he's a dull boring limited actor. I actually think he didn't deserve the career he already had.

The Ringer's The Rewatchables touched on an obvious- Lethal Weapon aged him out with all its old guy jokes, from the very first film onwards.
