Since Religion, Faith, and Spirituality is part of a movie message board, I thought I’d ask the non-believers: what are your favorite movies about religion, faith or spirituality – pro or con those subjects?
I’ll start:
La Passion de Jeanne d’Arc (The Passion of Joan of Arc) / Carl Theodor Dreyer (1928)
The Song Of Bernadette / Henry King (1943)
The Razor’s Edge / Edmund Goulding (1946)
Ikiru / Akira Kurosawa (1952).
Nattvardsgästerma (Winter Light) / Ingmar Bergman (1962)
Léon Morin, Prêtre (Leon Morin, Priest) / Jean-Pierre Melville (1962)
Il Vangelo Secondo Matteo (The Gospel According to St. Matthew) / Pier Paolo Pasolini (1964)
Babettes Gaestbud (Babette’s Feast) / Gabriel Axel (1987)
Kundun / Martin Scorsese (1997)

I've really seen very few films that are about religion. But I liked Elmer Gantry.

Pier Paolo Pasolini's The Gospel According to Saint Matthew is the one 'religious' movie that does it for this agnostic.

Last Temptation of Christ Dogma The Man From Earth Ben-Hur (1959)
The Ten Commandments (1956)
Constantine (2005)
The Seventh Sign (1988) Seven (1995) The Prophecy (1995) The Da Vinci Code End of Days
The Devil's Advocate Mister Frost
Honorable mentions to The Passion of the Christ, and Jesus Camp. I consider them good, but not really enjoyable; one viewing was enough.

I've really seen very few films that are about religion. But I liked Elmer Gantry. "People everywhere are the same in one thing - they're all afraid to die." - Elmer Gantry
And therein lies the primary reason for the existence of religion.
When I saw The Exorcist with my college roommate, my roommate was so religious that he went to church daily for three days.
I remember, "The next Voice You Hear" about God speaking through the radio to all mankind at the same time. One of the stars was Nancy Reagan before she married Ronald.
"Apostasy" about a JW mother faithful to Jehovah even though one daughter gets pregnant (and is disfellowshipped) and the other daughter dies from leukemia because the Elders refuse to allow her to have a blood transfusion. Elder: "We must put Jehovah first, even before our family"
As for religious tidbits within a movie or TV show:
From CSI: Rev. Rhodes: Mr. Grissom, do you believe in a separate, living evil? Gil Grissom: You're primitive man on the Savannah. You see something move out of the corner of your eye. You assume it's a hyena. You run, you live. If you assume it's the wind and you're wrong, you die. We have the genes of the ones who ran. We're genetically hard-wired to believe living forces that we cannot see. Rev. Rhodes: The Devil's slickest trick is making us believe he isn't real, but call his name loud and long enough, [ Rev. Rhodes knocks on the table four times] Rev. Rhodes: guess who comes knocking on your door? Jim Brass: Usually guys like you.
From Death Wish II, Paul Kersey has just found Stomper, the man who killed his wife. Kersey is holding Stomper at gunpoint. Stomper is wearing a big cross around his neck:
Kersey: [Do] you believe in Jesus? Stomper: Yes, I do. Kersey: Well, you’re gonna meet him. {BANG}
Patton demanding the priest give him a weather prayer so that Paton can kill other humans tomorrow.
Star Wars: Your sad devotion to that ancient religion has not helped you conjure up the stolen data tapes, or given you clairvoyance enough to find the Rebel's hidden fort...
And: The Force (read: Religion) can have a strong influence on the weak-minded. You will find it a powerful ally.

Rings of the story in Joshua where...at Joshua's request the Lord made the sun and moon to stand still so Israel might kill more of their enemies.

My favorite quote is in red. Inherit the Wind Fiddler on the Roof The Seventh Sign Leap of Faith Interestingly, an atheist friend of mine, whose father was a Baptist minister, had also watched "The Seventh Sign". He told me that true believers saw it as a positive movie affirming the Judeo-Christian version of things, while he and I noted the little inconsistencies - when Abby says that she was taught that god was love, in the middle of the chaotic drive to the prison. My friend and I thought it should give the true believers pause to reconsider. On the original IMDb, it is listed as a horror film.

I looked up Maria Goretta and found an interesting story of a short life. If for no other reason, I would be interested in seeing how the film makers managed to get a full-length movie (I presume it is a feature length film, the database doesn't give a run time) out of her brief time on Earth.
