The original is one of the most boring movies I have ever seen and the actor who plays his sidekick gives a terrible performance. Mouth, if you read this, it means I'm disappointed in your opinion of this fine actioner. It also means you've broken a filament controlling a 13-second delay trigger. End of post. Bang, you're dead I slightly prefer the original now after re-watching both and the reason the remake is close is entirely because of Ben Foster, who outacts everyone in the original and everyone else in the remake by a significant margin. Though his version of the character is written differently. Someone with a lot of underlying anger.

When I heard they were remaking it I finally decided to see the original
haven't seen the remake. Don't plan to. It sounds gay. Statham is ok but he is no Bronson. And they ruined the ending by the sound of it.
I liked the original--it is a slow burner character study.
The podcast The Bloody Pit did a show on it.
Jan Michael Vincent was fine--he was the son of a psycho just as Bronson's character was. The fact that he didn't even know who killed his father made it more ironic--he was someone who just wanted to kill for pleasure and money unlike Bronson who likely only got into it because of his father's psycho parenting. The fact that Bronson was trying to mentor him was kind of sick--he may felt guilty about Harry and or felt so lonely. That's the best element of it--and for once Jill Ireland had a meaningful role in it --I wonder why she never appeared in the Stone Killer--Bronson would walk out on producers if they didn't give her a role).
Chicken lickin' is lickin' chicken.

I think the original guy is deliberately underwritten/underplayed to make it a little more surprising when he backstabs Bronson. I could be wrong, though.
I like Foster a lot so that's not too surprising. Although Bronson is one of my favorite action stars. Not a great actor, but a badass motherfucker.

Bronson is very hit or miss for me. Here he is a miss. Death Wish he hits. I wasn't surprised when the original guy backstabs Bronson , (nor did I care) I was just expecting it to be for a different reason. Jan-Michael Vincent is just a bad actor imo. I have seen him in other movies. He is in another Bronson movie as a serial killer. I liked him a little more in that, but he still isn't good in it.

I guess I was wrong about him playing the serial killer in a different Bronson movie. That was a different actor.

I have been watching clips of him from other '70s movies and he is better in those clips. So I think Winter is just bad at directing his actors in The Mechanic. All the performances are bland and uninteresting imo. That was my main problem with it.

It's a tie, I have them both at 5/10.

That’s actually a different actor (Gene Davis) from Jan-Michael Vincent, but they do look a lot alike.
