Linda Blair might return too?
Giving us all hope for the sequel that's coming.

It's OK if you take your time before showing an anti-possession ritual in your movie, even if it's the premise, as long as the plot can engage the audience. THE EXORCIST was by no means boring, but it did have scenes that, in retrospective, weren't essential. In that regard, I think that THE EXORCIST VI: BELIEVER has a better structure. It doesn't meander. Certain moments manage to be compelling because these characters' personalities, their arcs and the dynamics they share with one another stand out a lot more. Not to mention the good cast. However, at the end of the day, this franchise is part of a certain genre, so each installment is judged by those standards. One could defend some of the other sequels for not being scary like the original, since they had more of a psychological thriller approach, but this one is trying to be mainly a traditional horror movie. Well... Every single cinematic technique it uses in order to freighten the viewer fails.
4/10

Still need to see this... I'm late as usual. But my Friend's have said it's not very good. But I like to judge for myself. I'm assuming they'll make part 2 with a different director? ( Thought I read that.)

So... it's not terrible. I think it got a worse reception than it deserved. It's nothing special for sure, and it bearing this title and the connection to the original does it no favors, but in this series and in the category of the billions of Exorcist/exorcism movies, it's perfectly average, if not much better than most of the cheap and shitty possession movies that we've seen.
It just feels familiar and not as profound as it would like to be. But the cast is good, and it's generally fairly well directed. There's a good, somber tone to the whole thing which, if the script served it better, would work fairly well. It's shot with tone and style in mind and it moves at a decent pace. It's just that nothing about this feels new, nor does it feel as if it's a piece with the original film particularly. Not in tone, style, or theme really. And this demon doesn't have the gravity or personality of the Pazuzu of the original movie. These girls say vile things and have a gross appearance and get put through the ringer, but there's no real sense of the aim of this demon. It's basically just to torture the girls and the people trying to help them. There's not much to it...and then there's a pseudo twist or plot development at the end that feels kinda odd if I even understood what happened.
Anyway, it doesn't need another sequel and may or may not get one, but this has some merits. It ends with a scene that seems like it's meant to set up further character stuff, but it would also be a reasonable conclusion. Ultimately this an average movie, which is not good enough for its namesake, but it's better than most of the Exorcist ripoffs I've seen. It doesn't need to exist by any means, but I think the reception isn't quite warranted.

I've been almost embarrassed for not walking out of the test screening hating it and warning everyone of the disaster about to set down on them; rather, I thought it was just another blase legacy sequel. The worst thing I can say about it is what they do with Ellen Burstyn, who also clearly phoned it in.

I kind of think I do, but it was so quick and really wasn't very clear. But obviously what happened to her earlier was weird and perhaps a little undignified. Can't blame her for not giving it her all. And these studios really are just trying to find excuses to use this de-aging technology and other new CGI techniques. It was really not necessary and felt a little out of place here. There's a lot more I could say that would make it seem like I really hated, but like you said; it's really just another blasé legacy sequel. It's just ordinary.

Variety: David Gordon Green Exits ‘Exorcist’ Sequel as Universal, Blumhouse Search for New DirectorI knew this was expected to happen, but didn't realize it had been confirmed. The semi surprise here is that they're saying that despite this setback, they're still moving ahead with the sequel. I suppose it's easy enough to make a whole new thing with Linda Blair if they want to, but if they plan on building off of a movie that didn't work, that would seem like an odd way to go. And considering the reception of his last three movies now, and all of the upheaval and chaos and HBO/Max/Warner Bros. he's not gonna be making that proposed Hellraiser TV series anymore.
