It’s bad, almost as obnoxious as the original. It has got more style than most superhero movies but honestly it feels like a culmination of today’s media culture: a satisfying of audience’s extreme bloodlust and really poor lowbrow juvenile humor. The movie touches on themes like American imperialism whilst displaying violence of pornographic levels in nearly every scene (faces being blown off, bodies blown apart, guts, organs, entrails galore). Seems like Deadpool started the superhero sub genre of ultra violence with each entry getting more and more over the top (The Boys, Invincible, and now this). I’m being hypocritical because like most of today’s audiences, I myself like some good gore. But this was just borderline ridiculous, and felt so glorified it can’t help but come off as extremely douchey and hypocritical, especially when it unsophisticatingly tries to touch on themes that contradict it. It feels like more and more adults aren’t finding regular superhero movies entertaining anymore so somehow the “grownup” response is to have the same superhero movie framework (seriously, this is the same goddamn superhero movie we’ve seen 100x) but with insane amounts of violence and profanity, somehow making it “fresh” or something. In the end though I don’t think adults will enjoy this, it’s completely targeted toward a youth audience, and whilst I’ve never been the “video games cause mass shootings” guy, this filth can’t be healthy for the developing mind. Complete disingenuous bullshit, I really don’t like Gunn as a human. What did y’all think of this one?
3/10
Edit: Threw some shade toward Invincible but actually found that little show to be wonderful, highly recommend it.
