the rcc is about as far away from 'selling everything you have and giving it to the poor' as one can get.

Not a bit. No one wants to take off the kid gloves against Peter, but the fact is that the "twelve" did set themselves up above others, contrary to the command of Jesus, and Jesus used the holy spirit of life and healing, never of killing and decay, yet Peter's first action was to call upon an angel of killing for two people who tested him. Turned out they were right.
From the most simple and irrefutable word of Jesus, we know that the papacy isn't affirmed in the NT.
That doesn't make the papacy bad. The papacy made the papacy bad for centuries after it became an "estate". Are they "good guys" now? Probably. I wouldn't bet my soul on it, though.

If it hadn't been for the Church in Constantinople, the Roman Catholics probably would have been more brazen in their editing and manipulation of the Bible.
