It is my favorite of all the Star Trek movies, because it isn't an action movie but more of a movie inspired by 2001: A Space Odyssey. I love the long drawn out stuff and the atmosphere and mysterious feeling of the whole movie. V'ger is fascinating to me. Jerry Goldsmith's score is wonderful and the vfx are impressive for 1979. I have only seen the director's cut though. I don't know what the theatrical version is like. The Director's Cut is superior. The theatrical version feels a bit more bloated due to padding and the effects, though still phenomenal by 1979 standards, aren't quite on a par with the 2001 version. It's still a fantastic film, but the Director's Cut is definitely the definitive take. No other version is required.

It's a phenomenal, intelligent, visually arresting and musically superb science fiction classic in its own right. While the character work here isn't as strong as what we get in its sequels due to the heavy emphasis on plot and effects, it represents a (in my opinion) hugely successful attempt to translate a spirited if oftentimes corny cult 60s sci-fi show into the realm of hard sci-fi. It isn't my favourite Trek movie by any means but I greatly appreciate its unique take on the franchise.
