The family/kid are adding to waiting time in both queues before they get served. For this reason I call foul play...  But then again, if you are waiting behind the family and they scuttle over to the kid's queue, the way is clear for you to be served next. So maybe that's the wrong call...  And then again, again, if you are behind the kid you'll feel aggrieved when his clan join him, bumping up your waiting time...  |

You choose a line based on who's already lined up.
It's like the person in front of you as you're just about to put your small number of groceries on the belt pulling over a family member with a huge cartful of stuff in front of you from the next line.
