Friday the 13th part III (1982), despite being a longtime horror fan I'm not very familiar with the F13 franchise and only relatively late in life watched the early ones. This one makes no sense. There is a lot of time spent on character development that goes nowhere because they all die, plot elements with no payoff, a random gang that amounts to filler, very little sex and nudity, and the kills aren't very creative. It's not Camp Crystal Lake, Jason doesn't have any motivation and there is no rhyme or reason to his behavior. There is some subplot about the main girl that is never resolved. It's not a good slasher and adds nothing to the franchise. The F13 series was the franchise I chose to catch up on during last years challenge and I came to the conclusion that overall it really is a crappy series of films. Not all are terrible, but none raise above OK (the only ones I really have time for are Jason X - which most F13 fans hate, and Part 2 which is unintentionally hilarious). What I realised is that with all the big horror franchises - Halloween, Herllraiser, Alien, Nightmare On Elm Street, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Howling etc - they all kicked off with a great film. The first Friday 13th is just OK....credit to the franchise, it stayed at the the same level of quality, or thereabouts throughout. Whereas the others generally dropped - the disadvantage of setting a high bench mark.

Nobody Sleeps in the Woods Tonight (2020) - FTV - 6.5/10 A fun Polish wilderness horror on Netflix. Quite looking forward to the sequel which is out this week.
Phantasm (1979) - 6/10 Phantasm II (1988) - 5/10 Another so called classic I can't see what the fuss about. That it is so odd and nonsensical is maybe why I gave it a generous 6/10. The sequel is even more nonsensical and less entertaining.
Fear Street Part One: 1994 (2021) - FTV - 7/10 Fear Street Part Two: 1978 (2021) - FTV - 7/10 Fear Street Part Three: 1666 (2021) - FTV - 7/10 A really enjoyable series of films. The gore effects are nasty and very good. Some great choices for the soundtracks but at times over used. But other than that, no real complaints. It kept me entertained and that is the most important thing.

I finally watched You're Next, thanks to jcush . I really enjoyed it. It was refreshing to see a final girl who is intelligent and capable right out of the gate. She was ready for them but they weren't ready for her.

Phantasm III: Lord of the Dead (1993) - FTV - 4/10 Phantasm IV: Oblivion (1998) - FTV - 4/10 Phantasm: Ravager (2016) - FTV - 3/10 So that's the whole franchise viewed (2-5 for the first time). What I have read, a series that some have said straddles the boundries between dreams and reality, and ventures into surrealism. Nah, more like five non-sensical films they seem to make up as they go along whenever the opportunity to make a sequel arrives. And I've concluded one of the heroes of the series is a borderline sex pest.

Counting it as a rewatch, although I never saw the first half before, Thir13en Ghosts (2001). Decently cast, interesting over the top ghosts, Matthew Lillard overacting as usual. I found it mildly entertaining.

The Honeymoon Phase I don’t know what was worse, the acting, the script, or the guys haircut.

The Woods (2006)
This is a relatively well-made horror movie that takes place in the 1960s, about a young girl (Agnes Bruckner) who is sent to a school for girls after starting a fire at her home. Turns out the school is run by a coven of witches, led by Patricia Clarkson. Bruce Campbell plays the girl's father and he is always a welcome inclusion to any horror movie. Aside from that there isn't much more I can say positive about the movie. The problem is mostly with the script, which gets progressively less interesting as it goes along until it finally falls apart completely in the ridiculous last act. The tone shift during the final scene is sort of amusing in that it takes a lot of inspiration from Sam Raimi, but it feels very much like the writers just didn't know what to do with the story at a certain point. There is nothing particularly original here and it borrows lazily from many horror movies before it, particularly Suspiria.
5.5/10

Well, I'm catching up fast enough. I always have a theme or pattern that emerges throughout the month. This year seems to be man-eating monsters (primarily water based) and slashers.

I had planned at one point to check off many of the classic monster flicks...but so far ive only watched a few of them. I still got this weekend tho.

Ghosts of War...i was actually really into this when it focused on the war aspect...lol....the haunted chateau stuff was ok...but that odd twist ending was meh. Wish it woulda just chose to be one thing or the other.
Don't Breathe...I liked it...the only thing i really rolled my eyes at was how dumb and selfish and just totally out of their depth the intruders were. There were so many moments where any normal person just says 'F this Im out of here' but the greed consumed their logic and reason i guess. Still pretty good tho. Loved the rottweiler.

Anonymous Andy ’s Vincent Price theme whet my appetite for some Price. So I enjoyed a triple treat last night. All first time viewings. Tower of London (that also included Diary of A Madman & The Comedy of Terrors) was the pick of the lot. Price gleefully at the top of his game, and director Roger Corman efficiently at work. It was amusing watching Tower of London and Diary of A Madman set-up as drive-in double feature with the added commercial breaks, intermissions, cartoons and trailers between the films.

Comedy of Terrors is on the list, though now that you posted that video, I may have to carve out some time (perhaps Saturday morning) and watch the whole thing. Currently trying to cram in as many classic favorites as I can before midnight on Sunday. My next Price watch will be Scream and Scream Again, which I am looking forward to a great deal (got the Kino blu-ray for a nice Price and all).

I must confess to having fallen behind on my viewings these past few weeks, but life and some health issues have gotten in the way. I've managed to digest a fair few Simpsons Treehouse of Horror shows, South Park Halloween specials and 90s Outer Limits but it's been all quiet on the movie front. I'm considering opting for a few double bills to make up for lost time. We'll have to see.

PS have you watched Korn's Groovy Pirate Ghost Mystery? That's one of my favorite South Park episodes, Halloween or not (and I could take or leave Korn).

Pin (1988) A mentally unbalanced young man inherits his late father's anatomy doll and forms a bond with it. He does everyday ventriloquism with the doll, but eventually takes things way too far.
Critics and audiences seemed to have liked this psychological horror movie, but I just couldn't get into it. It's an all-too-familiar concept that doesn't really offer anything fresh, and I didn't find it to be the least bit chilling or creepy. The characters were neither likeable or sympathetic, plus the incestuous overtones were a turn-off. Terry O'Quinn, as the doctor father, is wasted in a thankless role. And finally, writer/director Sandor Stern (who wrote the screenplay for The Amityville Horror) once again proves his talents are very limited.

And I agree it's the best of the early South Park Halloween specials. Those early seasons are remarkably underrated. "Sons 'o Witches" would be my favourite of the later ones.

Loved the concept and execution. A very disturbing and perplexing exploration of mental illness and delusion. Sorry to hear you didn't enjoy it, as it may well be my favourite horror movie of 1988.

How's everyone doing? Anyone poised to beat TheSowisMine by any chance? 😋
I just have 9 more to go before I beat my numbers for last year. I'm totally going to pull it off and am extremely shocked. Haven't watched nearly enough Vincent Price as I had intended and I fear a lot of the staples might be skipped over this year, but we'll see what the next three days bring.
