I don’t know how many people remember the banana on the wall story… So what do you think was the banana eater's point?
1) Was he just doing performance art and contributing to the piece?
2) Was he protesting and demonstrating that a banana on the wall is not art?
3) Or was he just a scofflaw and a vandal?
I looked him up on Wikipedia and although he seems to be a serious artist his explanation makes it look like he was being playful… On 7 December 2019, Datuna ate the banana installed as part of Comedian, by Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan, which had recently sold for $120,000 at Art Basel Miami. Datuna called his intervention an act of "art performance", dubbed Hungry Artist. He commented that he loves Maurizio Cattelan's artwork and really loves this installation, adding that it was very delicious. He added that “What we perceive as materialism is nothing but social conditioning. Any meaningful interaction with an object could turn it to art. I am a hungry artist, and I am hungry for new interactions.” Galerie Perrotin, which was exhibiting the work, replaced the banana consumed by Datuna and stated that the value of the piece was the "idea", not the physical banana. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Datuna

Sure, bananas get ripe and spoiled and would need to be replaced.
But it was not up to Datuna to remove the banana. He ruined the art piece for anyone who went to see it. Sure, we can all be so avant-garde and delight in Datuna's "performance art". But his work was a separate piece. It was grandstanding and an act of contempt towards the original artist.
The museum administration were profligates for not pressing charges.
I checked out Datuna's work. His work is crap. I think Datuna's piece "Portait of America" is banal and flag desecration.
I would like to do my own piece entitled "Piss on Betsy Ross" where I urinate on his "Portrait of America". Lets see how long I would last before I was arrested and sued by the museum.
This is a travesty.
I actually think the whole story is pretty funny but then I don’t take the corporate art world that seriously. The art was the concept, not the physical reality so he didn’t really ruin the artwork. You can’t destroy an idea by eating it. I was trying to work out how such a simple idea like taping a banana to a wall came to be worth $120,000 and concluded that the price tag must have included regular banana and tape replacement (cost of materials and labour). I hope they agreed upon a reasonable time limit because that artist isn’t going to live forever.

Apparently the most important part of “Comedian” is the certificate.

But it was also a political act. It really cut to the core of the issue - it's just a damn banana taped to a wall. It's not art. I truly believe that was Datuna's point, and he made it brilliantly. And yes, it was an assault on the "corporate art world".
But it constituted vandalism plain and simple. He did ruin the piece for viewers that day. Like I said, if I pissed on his "flag" he wouldn't think that was so funny.
The museum should have called the cops.
Pissing on his artwork would be an entirety different act which doesn’t even reflect the nature of the work and would also annoy the (probably low grade) member of staff who has to clean it afterwards. The only thing of real worth concerning the banana is the certificate that wasn’t touched. The banana and tape were quickly replaced and only a few people didn’t get to pose in front of the banana for their funny photos while that happened. While that was happening people got the chance to watch a non traumatic news event happening before their very eyes. The art fair where this all happened is shown in the PSB video I posted slightly above. People paid $50 to wander the many cubicles and look the huge amount of art on display and, if they could afford it, take some home. It’s like a art supermarket.

So you're telling me that some fool was expected to fork over $150,000 for a banana which would have to be replaced every day anyway? What a scam.
Okay, maybe Datuna was a righteous terrorist in the war against art poseurs.
I think three certificates have been sold but the first two only cost $120,000. Anyway, my favourite work of art vandalism…

I have newfound respect for Mr Tuna even though his artwork sucks. I prefer it when street art remain on the street even though the shredded artwork wasn’t intended to be seen on the street. Banksy is a prankster (and that in itself involves self promotion) and like the banana incident everyone gets to win. I wouldn’t be surprised if the shredded art resells for more than it did before.
