I shave with a reimei double edge razor and a boar hair brush and pino silvestri shaving soap. I also have some king of shaves shave gel in a tube that I bought because it was on sale for a couple of bucks. I thought the king of shaves gel was slick enough, but because I wasn't using a brush with it it didn't lift the stubble enough to get a close shave. So for my next days shave I rubbed in some of the king of shaves gel, and instead of using my shaving soap, I used my brush and face lathered some dove soap on top of the gel. the lather was slick, thick, and gorgeous. My razor glided through it with zero irritation. I might start doing this all the time.

I have one of those double edged razors that belonged to my grandfather (I forget the brand?). I also have a high carbon steel straight razor. To be honest, I’ve never had the balls to try to shave with the straight razor.
I did once hear this though IheartTinyTim. The Badger hair brush is the best, since it has the highest hygroscopic properties (moisture retention) so it lathers up the best, and provides the best shave.
