I went to a Lutheran church last Sunday for a confirmation. At one point the congregation recited a bunch of stuff. One of the things they recited was, "I believe in the holy Catholic church."
I grew up going to a Lutheran church but we never said that. Anyone know why this would be recited in a Lutheran church?

My mother was a Lutheran in southern Indiana, and that church was pretty nondescript from my visits there. She moved to Louisville where I was born, and the Lutheran church there was just straight Satanic. She made an honest mistake of enrolling me into the school there in the fourth grade, where the teacher tried to help the students "sacrifice" me. They beat me every day for no reason, and refused to let me participate in anything.
There were things we had to remember, and I thought I memorized them. I forgot them by now. I remember the phrase "holy Catholic church", and it was all just a ruse to do Satanic things to their "sacrificial outsiders".
What does that mean? It means you were supposed to first say the Lutheran church was correct and the Catholic church was evil. If you didn't say the Catholic church was evil, you were beaten by teacher and select "insider" students.
Then, you had to recite the bit with the "holy Catholic church", and if you didn't, that same group beat you.
But if you did recite it, they would beat you for saying the Catholic church wasn't evil.
It was all just an excuse to be Satanic. That was a Lutheran church in Louisville, Kentucky, off of Poplar Level Road, which is where the "Sons of Satan" had a lot of activity during the last century.
I found out it wasn't a unique experience. A girl in my theater group dated a boy from Los Angeles, and he said the exact same thing happened to him in California.
Some Lutheran churches are okay, I'm sure. The one in the small Indiana town was normal. For whatever reason, the city Lutheran churches appear to be where the Sons of Satan have their clubs.

It's part of the Apostle's Creed, adopted by many denominations.

How many Christian churches claim to be universal? I know of only one.

How many Christian churches claim to be universal? I know of only one. Is it… The Universal Church of the Kingdom of God is an evangelical charismatic Christian denomination with its headquarters at the Temple of Solomon in São Paulo, Brazil. The church was founded in 1977 in Rio de Janeiro by Bishop Edir Macedo, owner of the multi-billion television company RecordTV.

We did recite that when I was growing up but it was shorter and we didn't say the catholic church part. I wonder why some chose to say it and others don't.

You wrote claim, did you not? The fact that one church thinks they’re IT doesn’t mean anyone else can’t claim to be IT but at least you lot have a bunch of text to make you feel extra special.

How many Christian churches claim to be universal? I know of only one. The little denomination I grew up in used essentially the same creed invoking the term catholic...much to the confusion of us young'uns who thought we were supposed to be at war with the Catholics.

Your comment about how adults are oblivious to how words might fall on the ears of children makes me recall how, as a child, I understood that the word "want" meant desire or wish to have something. Nobody in Sunday School ever mentioned that "want" can also mean to be lacking in something. And so, I would hear the words "The Lord is my shepherd I shall not want", and think, OK, so, he's something you don't want?

Reminds me of the joke...told in religious groups where some preacher, believing the Holy Spirit would 'guide' him to find just the right scriptures to help a person he was counseling decided to just open the Bible randomly and read the first scripture he saw. He opened it and read, "and Judas went and hanged himself." Aghast, he closed it and opened it again and read, "go thou and do likewise." Red faced, he tried it again and read, “Whatever you are about to do, do it quickly”
