A movie like Die Hard wouldn't be the same without Bruce Willis. However, with a movie like 2001: A Space Odyssey, seems anyone could have been cast and the movie wouldn't be any different. Maybe this is because the characters in the Kubrick film are nondescript and lacking much in personality. Maybe it's a good thing he didn't direct Die Hard.

This list would include almost every Marvel universe movie- in fact, that's the way they want it to be

Well with the exception of Douglas Rain as HAL maybe. If Martin Balsam had supplied HAL's voice as was originally intended, I think the feel of the movie, or at least his scenes would have been a lot different.

12 Angry Men maybe? Not to take anything away from its cast, who were all terrific, but I feel like much of the power of the film lies in its characters rather than in the actors playing them, if that makes any sense.
