The previews for Branagh's film put me in mind of John Boorman's Hope And Glory - remembering a childhood during WW II London.

I'd "recommend" THE CRYING GAME, IN THE NAME OF THE FATHER and HIDDEN AGENDA, all of which get a mention. Not heard of quite a few myself. One not mentioned but partly set in Belfast is CLOSING THE RING, Dickie Attenborough's swansong, which I enjoyed. Old school romantic drama set in two time frames... today and in WW2 with Shirley Maclaine and Christopher Plummer. and this deserves a nod for being politically unpopular enough to have been dropped from the London Film Festival. One of Sterling Hayden's last roles if you can track it down. . and given this Made a star of Jamie Dornan (one of the adult "names" in the Branagh) it probably deserves a nod. Gripping stuff.

Thanks london777 An interesting read and some excellent film recommendations... I Am Belfast (2015) documentary, directed by Mark Cousins gives an impressive contemporary insight Surprisingly a drama film that gives a background to the Irish political struggles and division is the German film Mein Leben für Irland , My Life for Ireland (1941) directed by Max W. Kimmich. Commencing in Dublin, it is a Nazi propaganda film that tells of an Irish nationalist family and their involvement in the Irish struggle of independence over two generations, from 1903 to the tumultuous political period of the early 1920s. The movie was produced for Nazi-occupied Europe with the intent of challenging pro-British allegiances, and typically there is a distinctly anti-British atmosphere throughout, brutal and unscrupulous but no match for the "earthy" Irish race...

Though not every scene was shot in Belfast it took place in Belfast, Carol Reed's Odd Man Out 1947. Some of the scenes can be found here: Belfast Reelstreets Odd Man Out
