They're basically tied, but as of now I'd give the slight edge to Prometheus. I like both.

I felt as if Prometheus at least tried to be something and go in some direction, now with Alien Covenant, I'm super fucking lost. I have a shitload of questions and the main engineers question about who they are and what they wanted and how they created us or whatever is brushed over in 45 seconds and it explains nothing.
SPOILERS BELOW
So David creates the real xenomorph through genetic experimentation and giving birth to these facehugger eggs, does that mean he created the Alien queen from Aliens too? Is he the creator of all xenomorphs? And how exactly does this toxic weapon work? It dissolves flesh right? And when it gets old (correct me if wrong) it genetically evolves into some sort of xenomorphic virus that creates different hybrids of these aliens (neomorph, xenomorph, smaller xenomorph and so on, facehuggers etc etc). So David killed all the engineers? OK, so that explains nothing about who they are and what they wanted. And it explains nothing from Prometheus where the engineer just killed himself in the beginning with it. I'm just gonna have to assume they're making more prequel sequels that'll eventually explain this shit but since all the engineers seem to be dead, how come in Alien 79 there's an engineer ship on that planet (with an engineer pilot) with a cargo of hybrid alien eggs that David created which spawned actual xenomorphs through facehuggers? This doesn't make sense. These are the main questions I thought was being answered here. But there seems to be more about creation and that sort of existential questions (which is partly interesting) but not fully realized.
The movie itself actually lacks tension, there's no buiild up, no real edge of your seat stuff since the characters are really underdeveloped, the first half is basically mourning of a dead character and not so much about the characters on the ship. I got no connection to nothing. And Daniels arc is pretty much wasted. It all feels very routine. And the unfolding of events is mainly based on really far fetched decisions which just made me shake my head.
At least the movie looked good. Acting good with what they got, alien violence is okay I guess, set design, VFX, production design, all of that was great as they always are in Ridley's fillms. Cool seeing more of the xenomorph actually moving about, seeing it doing shit, a little unsettling but overall it just lacked stakes since it was going after people I didn't know nor cared about
4/10
(sorry for review lol)

I do agree that just throwing the engineer plot to the side is extremely frustrating though. For me the movie has a great deal of tension which definitely makes a difference but the main reason it works for me is because I find David to be a very interesting character.

The movie hinted at something interesting with David/Walter altercation. I get you, Fassbender's great. The acting was pretty great actually, in general for the movie, the whole is just pretty weak I thought

Both movies were uniquely pretty weird in that I kept feeling like "hey, wait, go back to that...what the hell was that." Just saw "Alien:Covenant" and was a little underwhelmed. Watched "Prometheus" a week ago to get in the mood.
No spoilers here...
While I'm happy they revisited some elements of "Prometheus", "Alien:Covenant" rose some more questions and was somehow even more vague. Overall, I liked both movies (despite that they have similar problems), but I'll give the edge to "Prometheus."
