Gary Oldman and it isn't even really close.
Norton has one performance that is better than any performance Gary Oldman has given imo, but overall Gary Oldman is much more talented. When Norton is giving his best performances you still see Edward Norton. Oldman becomes different people.

It’s a tough one to answer. At his best, Oldman is a fantastic actor of course - but he has a tendency towards hamming it up or phoning it in that has resulted in some terrible performances, and that holds me back from worshiping him like some do. I think Norton may actually have a greater range.
50/50. I’ll go with Norton as the poor guy doesn’t have a vote yet, but may well change my mind later.

He does tend to go OTT for some roles and he has phoned in many, but with a few exceptions I generally think his OTT ("hamming it up") is effective. I don't like his performance in The Fifth Element and I have issues with his performance in The Darkest Hour, but other than that I like when he hams it up in certain roles. I use to have issues with how OTT he goes in The Professional, but I have come around on that. I obviously dislike when he phones it in though and he has done that quite a few times in the past 20 years.

I actually didn’t mind him in The Fifth Element - his style of playing to the back of the room fit the tone of the film pretty well. Lost in Space is the 90s sci-fi where I found him intolerable. I disliked him in Leon but haven’t seen it since the 90s so it’s possible I’d revise my opinion. I thought he was abysmal in Darkest Hour, just a shockingly misguided performance that failed on every level. Flashes of his great talent still often show themselves - I thought he was excellent in Mank (the exception being that lengthy drunken rant, where some of his worst tendencies emerged) but I so wish we could see the Oldman of Sid & Nancy and Prick Up Your Ears again sometime soon!

I think Oldman is the better actor.
I might like Norton a bit more though. I like both of them a lot though.

We definitely disagree on The Darkest Hour. I think it is a good performance overall, but he does have a handful of cringe-y parts. I was only disappointed as much as I was, because he is one of my favorite actors and I hold him to a standard that is perhaps too high. His one scene of great acting is the scene where he is talking to the citizens on the train. I don't hate his performance in The Fifth Element, but it just feels very uninspired. Like Johnny Depp in Alice in Wonderland. Like he just thought up some quirky idea of acting and it just leaves me annoyed. It is an irritating quirky performance. I don't remember his performance in Lost in Space.
