Going through 80's films and ran across Stand and Deliver. As a teacher I am interested in how Hollywood portrays schools. The biggest takeaway is how much more restricted teachers are today in terms of language and acting.
In the movie, the teacher, Escalante, uses a lot of slang and edgy stuff to develop a rapport w/ students. He calls one kid "finger man" and uses a math problem involving how many girlfriends a gigolo can have; he also hits a piece of clothing on a student to wake them up, puts his hands on a girl while encouraging her.
Today all that stuff could get a teacher in real trouble- the watchwords in education today are "appropriateness" and "professionalism". You can't give student's nicknames, using provocative examples to teach, or touch anyone w/o opening yourself up to discipline charges and/or personal lawsuits. It's real hands off today. I can see why as these techniques could be abused but it also leads to a more sterile environment.
I have taught long enough to see the environment change from looseness to strictness on this issue.
