Although many prefer the sequel, this first film is still fun thanks to the inspired casting and some amusing lines/scenes. Leonard Maltin Movie Guide Review: The Addams Family (1991) - 3 out of 4 stars"Piquant comedy based on Charles Addams' macabre cartoon family (later popularized on the same-named TV series), whose greedy lawyer tries to plunder their fortune by planting an imposter in the household who claims to be their long-lost Uncle Fester. Huston and Julia are absolutely perfect as Morticia and Gomez, and maintain a light touch while dispensing their gleefully ghoulish black humor. Impressive directorial debut for cinematographer Sonnenfeld. Followed by two sequels."

It's probably the only time where I prefer the film adaptation over the original tv series it's based on.

It's probably the only time where I prefer the film adaptation over the original tv series it's based on. Agreed. The film drew its inspiration directly from Addams' crazed sense of black humor; the tv series had to tone that down a lot and make it sweet and family-friendly, not surprising for that era. John Astin and Carolyn Jones made the best of that and made the show a bit better than it deserved to be, but humor-wise it was never anywhere close to the original cartoon source.
