She had a very long career before she tried the movies or filmed medium career, before Alfred Hitchcock used her acting talents in two Cary Grant movies, as future Mother-in-Law in one and his mother in another. Sadly those two movies are nearly the only ones sticking out.
Jessie Royce Landis (1896–1972)
For most of her live she was a stage actress, her father was a musician, and at age 14 fourteen she won an acting scholarship. As she was born in Chicago she started in travelling road shows of hit shows from there, not as fancy as Broadway roadshows. Broadway opened their eyes and started using her from 1926 on their roadshows.
When times where tough, she begun appearing as a voice actress on Radio from 1940's.
Her first larger role in movies came with
Mr. Belvedere Goes to College 1949 starring Clifton Webb.
Before that she had her only leading lady role in a George Bancroft movie called
Derelect 1930.
A seafaring adventure.
As it lead to nothing there is a gap of nearly 20 years.
