We were so fortunate to have him for so long because Stephen Sondheim was a master class of musical storytelling and songwriting. West Side Story and its songs are among my favorites from him. Rest in peace.

This one really knocked me for a loop, for so many reasons. Among other things, Into the Woods is what got me into musicals—my mother saw the original production and bought a beautifully illustrated picture-book adaptation, and as a kid I read it over and over again. Rest in peace, Mr. S, and thank you for everything—the shows, the opinionated but always insightful critiques, the music, those wonderful words. Or, as Sondheim put it himself:

R.I.P. Stephen Sondheim
Thanks for all the songs you added to The Great American Songbook! Send in the Clowns with Glynis Johns (who is still with us at age 98) here sung not as a showtune but in the context of the play, and Sondheim wrote it for her. A Little Night Music
