Songs like 'Helter Skelter' (the Beatles) and 'In A Gadda-Da-Vida' (Iron Butterfly) were upping the ante, while Blue Cheer and the Who were piling on the decibels.
Thanks!

There were the precursors you mentioned, but IMO this was the first heavy metal song.

You Really Got Me , by The Kinks is usually accepted as the first one. Depends what you label as HM though, Blues Rock like Zep? certain psyche rock bands could also fit into the genre, so who knows. A lot of people tend to say it was a product of the "black country" and so give it to Sabbath. Probably would have to work out "what is HM" before you could find the first song.

A song that has a lineage from the 50's would be, 'The Train Kept A-Rollin'', originally by Tiny Bradshaw, but propelled by Johnny Burnette Trio and The Yardbirds, etc. The opening riff of Purple Haze heralded what was to come, incorporating the 'tritone', also known as the 'The Devil in Music'. And then, as has been mentioned, Black Sabbath inverted the tritone, and heavy metal was born... Before the 20th Century, it was Verdi's, 'Anvil Chorus'

The solo for 'You Really Got Me' has people in the U K claiming it invented punk, heavy metal and everything in between. It fits snugly between the Kingsmen and the Sonics.

I would argue this is the most metal pre-Black Sabbath song I've heard:

Paranoid.
But the best version of this song is on, speak of the devil. But i think, that is one of the last songs on the album. So it takes a while before you can hear it.

It's impossible to say for sure. "Helter Skelter" and "You Really Got Me" certainly have HM elements but they are kind of "one offs" from bands that were in now way Metal. It tough to even qualify what HM is. We had a three month argument at the bar I worked at over the random question "Is AC/DC Heavy Metal?"

But it turns out even the four main websites I use for album reviews can't agree on this particular question. Metal-Rules.com says yes, The Metal Crypt says no, Metal-Temple.com says yes, and The Metal Archives says no. Therefore, the answer is a resounding maybe!

I have a love/hate relationship with that site. It’s very useful but at the same time they don’t include some clearly metal bands because they don’t consider them to be tr00 metal, pretty pathetic imo. They include Rush, a prog rock band, but not metal bands like Between the Buried and Me, System of a Down, Slipknot, Korn, etc…

I have my own complaints about the site, but band exclusion isn't one of them. My main problem is some of their reviewers are ridiculously harsh in their reviews. For example, consider the album reviews for KK's Priest - "Sermons of the Sinner". OK, maybe it's not quite as good as "Firepower", but IMO it's a great album. I don't have a problem with the reviewers who gave it 65% and 66%, maybe they're not as enamored with this style as I am. But one reviewer gave the album an 18%, and another a 0%! C'mon, this is K.K. Downing. He's been doing this for 50 years! How can you possibly give him a 0%?!?

It’s not 0% or 18% bad though. I rate it about a 4-5/10. But yeah some of the reviews on that site are way too harsh. I think even Master of Puppets has a 0% review.

I checked and you're right - "Masters of Puppets" (my favorite Metallica album BTW) does have a 0% review.

Now that i think of it , the first heavy metal song has to have some heavy metal bass. So , in my opinion the first song to do that would be blackened.

It even contains "heavy metal" in the lyrics.

The Nile Song by Pink Floyd was quite heavy.
