Is it wrong to make a comedy about COVID-19? Is it wrong to make a film (no matter the genre) about the pandemic while it's still going? It's hard to answer that, because it might depend on each person's sensibilities and/or on the execution of each movie. What's not hard is explaining why 8 RUE DE L'HUMANITÉ (STUCK TOGETHER) fails at showing what it's like to experience a lockdown inside an apartment building. First of all, the only character who seems to care about safety measures (Martin Becquart) is a rude and selfish hypochondriac! Is there a "Most irresponsible movie" award?! Second of all, a lot of the conflicts are solved in the easiest way possible, including infidelity. I'm not saying that a cheater can never be forgiven. I'm saying that it's not something you move on from overnight. Especially if you and your significant other have to see "the third party" every day. That's one of many reasons why the whole "The residents have become a big family" doesn't ring true. There are 2 couples and the fact that they don't break up is a miracle. This plot only needed 80-90 minutes, but it goes on for 120. And right before the end credits, there's a dedication to people who have suffered and a message about human solidarity. That's right: The movie is pretending like the story we just saw was about resilience told with humor. No, it's a simply series of wacky situations (some of which aren't even connected to the current global situation). There's a scene where Claire (Martin's wife) is having a videoconference and Martin and Louna (their daughter) are making too much noise. I'm sorry, is the living room really the only place Claire can work in? The apartment isn't that small. And does she not have a headset? I'd like to underline a vaudeville-style routine that Martin, Claire and a cop perform, because it's the only scene that I found to be well-written. Don't get me wrong; I did laugh during other scenes... but because of how lame, forced and predictable the jokes were.
