I saw this on Reddit, posted in tribute after Sondheim’s passing, and thought posters here might be interested. Arranged alphabetically: I love the diversity in choices; I can’t imagine another list with movies so different as Torchy Blane in Chinatown, The Barbarian Invasions, and Fires on the Plain on it. Many of these seem particularly Sondheimian: Torchy Blane and The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes show his love of mysteries, he said Bernard Herrmann’s Hangover Square score was a major influence on Sweeney Todd, he thought about adapting Un carnet du bal and La belle équipe into musicals and did adapt Smiles of a Summer Night as A Little Night Music. But many of these choices— Spinal Tap, notably—did surprise me.

A noticeable lack of superhero movies.

Yes, a nice, eclectic list. I’ve seen 22 of them and The Thief of Bagdad is an all-time favourite of mine.
